mayor

From January 1, 2018 until the municipality was dissolved, Jeroen Staatsen ( VVD ) was the municipality's acting mayor. His colleagues included the alderman Ronald van Meygaarden (Dorpsbelangen), Ton van Maanen ( SGP ), Niko Wiendels ( CDA ) and the municipal secretary Jan Steurrijs.

history

Almost all the villages in the municipality were built around a castle, a manor or a fortified large farm in the Middle Ages . Important noble families from this area are u. a. Ter Leede, from the family of Messrs. Van Arkel ; Van Malsen ; De Cocq, whose progenitor comes from a Count de Châtillon from Blois in France; Pieck and others. It is possible that the Counts of Bentheim , or close relatives of them, owned goods in what is now the municipality of Geldermalsen until around 1306.

Buurmalsen was mentioned in a document as Ubaran Malsna (Obermalsen) as early as 850. Buurmalsen belonged to the glory of Buren , while Geldermalsen, on the other side of the Linge, belonged to the county of Geldern .

In 1129 there was already the important Mariënweerd monastery , which lives on in a different form in the "Marienweerdt country estate".

Acquoy was a barony in the 16th century that passed to the Dutch royal family by inheritance . The head of state can still call himself "Baron (esse) van Acquoy". Geldermalsen flourished when fruit growing for export came up in the late 19th and 20th centuries and the village got a train station. On June 25, 1967, the village of Tricht was hit by a kind of cyclone. Five residents were killed and 50 houses were destroyed. A memorial in the village still reminds of this.

On December 16, 2015, there were serious riots in Geldermalsen, which were directed against the refugees and were also received internationally. Up to 2000 people tried to storm a municipal council meeting in the town hall, at which a decision was made about the admission of 1500 refugees. The meeting had to be evacuated, fences were torn down, pyrotechnics and bottles were thrown at police officers and the town hall, and xenophobic slogans were chanted. The police had to fire several warning shots to push back the rioters. There were fourteen arrests.

Attractions

  • A bike tour through the municipality, where almost all places have a beautiful, medieval village church (for example the Pieterskerk in Beesd), is particularly worthwhile in April when the fruit trees are in full bloom. One should not forget the dikes of the picturesque Linge.
  • The "Landgoed Marienwaerdt", east of Beesd, consists of a large house (former monastery), a small forest, and farms where you can spend the night. In 2008 the four-wheel driving world championship is to take place here.
