al-Buhaira , also Beheira ( Arabic محافظة البحيرة Muhāfazat al-Buhaira , DMG Muḥāfaẓat al-Buḥaira , ancient Egyptian : S'Albufera , Egyptian-Arabic Muḥāfẓet El Beḥēra ), is one of the governorates in Egypt with 6,171,613 inhabitants.
It is located in the northwestern Nile Delta . It borders the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Kafr al-Sheikh , al-Gharbiyyah and al-Minufiyya governorates to the east, the Al-Jiza governorate to the south, and the Matruh and Alexandria governorates to the west . The governorate extends into the Libyan desert as far as the Wadi an-Natrun . The capital Damanhur is about 135 km from Cairo .
