Belit Nejat Onay (born January 15, 1981 in Goslar ) is a German politician from Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen . On November 10, 2019, he was elected Lord Mayor of the Lower Saxony state capital Hanover . He took up his post on November 22, 2019. Onay, who also has Turkish citizenship, is the first head of a German state capital with a migration background and the fourth green mayor of a major German city. From 2013 to 2019 he was a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament , having previously been a city ​​council member of Hanover from 2011 .

Education and family

Onay was born in Goslar in 1981. His parents came to Germany as Turkish guest workers from Istanbul in the 1970s and ran a restaurant. He describes himself as a "liberal Muslim". It was politicized by the murder attack in Solingen in 1993, in which right-wing extremists set fire in a residential building and killed five people of Turkish origin. At that time, his parents considered leaving Germany; he realized that "it matters where people come from and what they look like". After leaving the Ratsgymnasium Goslar in 2000 with the Abitur, he did his community service in the intensive care unit of the Dr. Herbert Nieper Hospital in Goslar.

He then studied law at the Leibniz University in Hanover from 2002 to 2008 . He completed his studies with the first state examination in law. In 2009 Onay started a doctoral project at the Law Faculty of the University of Bremen as a scholarship holder of the Heinrich Böll Foundation . Onay is married, has two children and lives in Hanover.

Onay joined the SPD as a student . He named Sigmar Gabriel from his hometown Goslar as a role model . He later resigned from the SPD. During his studies, he successfully ran for the CDU-affiliated ring of Christian-Democratic Students (RCDS) in the university elections of the University of Hanover and then sat for one year in the student parliament of the University of Hanover.

From 2008 to 2013 he worked in the office of the Green politician and former member of the state parliament Filiz Polat . From 2011 to 2014 Onay was councilor for Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen in Hanover , where he was deputy chairman of the green city council group. From 2013 to November 2019 Onay was a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament. In the Green parliamentary group he was the spokesman for domestic politics, local politics, migration and refugees, sport, network politics and data protection as well as the contact person for Islamic associations. He was also the secretary and member of the state parliament presidium.

After he held a conversation with young people from a member community of the Schura Lower Saxony in his function as the contact person for Islamic associations of the Greens parliamentary group in Lower Saxony, a group photo taken on this occasion was published on the website of the Federal Association of ATIB . Onay described this publication as "more than misleading" and announced the deletion of the photo.

On June 12, 2019, Belit Onay was nominated as a candidate for the mayor election on October 27, 2019 at the general meeting of the Green City Association of Hanover with 97.6 percent of the votes . Onay is in favor of more attractive local public transport and bicycle traffic, affordable housing and more family centers in Hanover. He wants to ban car traffic from the city center by 2030 and expand cycling based on the Copenhagen model . Other priorities are investment in education and the fight against child poverty.

In the election for Mayor of Hanover on October 27, 2019, Onay received 60,095 votes (32.2%) and was just under the strongest candidate with 49 votes ahead of the former head of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles nominated by the CDU , Eckhard Scholz (also 32, 2%) and the SPD Marc Hansmann (23.5%). Onay thus reached the runoff election on November 10, 2019. In this he prevailed with a majority of 52.9% against Scholz, who received 47.1% of the vote. On November 22nd, 2019, Onay was introduced to his office by Mayor Thomas Hermann . He has announced that he will provide significantly more affordable living space and drive a traffic turnaround in congested Hanover.

Onay resigned his state parliament mandate after his election as Lord Mayor on November 19, 2019, and Susanne Menge followed.

In March 2020, he campaigned for the admission of unaccompanied, minor children from Greek refugee camps .

Other offices

Onay was elected to the Presidium of the German Association of Cities by the main committee at the end of 2019 .
