Bernard "Ben" Rudolf Bot (born November 21, 1937 in Batavia ) is a Dutch politician and member of the CDA ( Christen Democratisch Appèl ). Bot was his country's foreign minister in the government of Jan Peter Balkenende between 2003 and 2007 .

Life

Ben Bot studied law at Leiden University , the Hague Academy of International Law and Harvard Law School in Cambridge . In 1968 he received his doctorate from the University of Leiden.

From 1963 he worked in the Dutch Foreign Ministry. From 1964 to 1970 he worked in the Representation of the Netherlands in the European Union , until 1976 he worked in the embassies in Buenos Aires and East Berlin . From 1986 to 1989 he was ambassador to Turkey . Then he was Secretary General in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Permanent representative of the Netherlands to the European Union from 1992 until retirement on January 1, 2003 .

On September 3, 2003 he became Foreign Minister in the second government under Balkenende. On February 22, 2007 he was replaced by Maxime Verhagen as Foreign Minister.
