Bernhard Liechtenauer

Bernhard Josef Karl Liechtenauer (born February 16, 1957 in Bayreuth ) is a major general in the Army of the German Armed Forces and since September 26, 2019 head of the Office for Army Development in Cologne .

Military career

Training and first uses

Liechtenauer joined the Bundeswehr in Mittenwald in 1976 with the Mountain Infantry Battalion 221, after which he completed his officer training in Münster . In October 1978 he was transferred to the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich and began studying economics and organizational sciences. During his studies he was appointed lieutenant on July 1, 1980 .

After completing his academic training, he returned to the troops in 1982 as a business graduate and was assigned to the 103rd Panzer Grenadier Battalion in Ebern, initially as a platoon leader and later as a troop telecommunications officer. On July 1, 1983, he was appointed first lieutenant . In 1985 he was transferred to the 62nd Panzer Grenadier Battalion in Wolfhagen , where he became company commander . Promotion to captain on January 9, 1986 was associated with this use .

General staff training and service as a staff officer

From 1990 to 1992 Liechtenauer completed the general staff course at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg . Subsequently he was transferred to the 5th Panzer Division in Diez , where he served as head of the  G2 staff department . On May 6, 1992, he was promoted to major . After this assignment he attended the Italian general staff training at the Scuola di Guerra and at the Centro Alti Studi di Difesa in Civitavecchia and Rome from 1994 to 1995, and on February 19, 1995 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. Back in Germany he was employed at the Army Office in Cologne as a department head in Department I (Conceptual Basics).

In 1997 he received his first troop command in Rotenburg an der Fulda when he became commander of the 52nd Panzer Grenadier Battalion. From there, his path took him in 1999 to the command staff of the armed forces on the Hardthöhe in Bonn , where he served as a consultant in Department VI 3 (financial planning personnel, infrastructure). In 2001 he changed posts within the ministry and was again a consultant, this time, however, at the command staff of the Army in the central department of the Inspector of the Army (fundamental matters, situation development and analysis). In 2003 he was transferred to Gelsdorf as a group leader on land warfare potential at the Bundeswehr Intelligence Center . On June 1, 2003 he was appointed colonel . In the following year he returned to Bonn as head of department for the central department of the army inspector.

General uses

From January 2008 Liechtenauer was entrusted with his second troop command and led the army brigade in Bruchsal as commander . On August 27, 2008, he was appointed Brigadier General. During his command, he completed his first assignment abroad from August 2008 to February 2009, where he was deployed as Deputy Chief of Staff at the KFOR headquarters in Pristina / Kosovo .

From May 2012 Liechtenauer was Department Head I in the Army Office in Cologne , which was converted into the Office for Army Development on June 27, 2013 . From April 2015 he was Chief of Staff and Deputy Head of Office before taking over the management of the department from Major General Reinhard Wolski on September 26, 2019 . In this post he was promoted to Major General in November 2019 in Liechtenauer.
