São Paulo Biennial
The São Paulo Biennale in São Paulo , Brazil , officially Portuguese Bienal Internacional de Arte de São Paulo , in the plural also Bienais de São Paulo, in short: Bienal de São Paulo , English also São Paulo Art Biennial , is a world art exhibition that has been held since 1951 and next to the Venice Biennale the second largest art biennale in the world.
history
It was founded by the Italian-Brazilian industrialist Ciccillo Matarazzo . Since 1957 it has been held in the Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion (Pavilhão Ciccillo Matarazzo) in the Parque do Ibirapuera . The large Biennale pavilion was designed by a team of architects led by Oscar Niemeyer and Hélio Uchôa and offers an exhibition area of 30,000 m².
It is the second oldest regular art biennial in the world and has been in its 60th year of existence in 2011 since it was founded. A partnership with the Venice Biennale has existed since August 2009.
It is supported and organized by the Fundação Bienal de São Paulo .
Both Brazilian and international art is shown at the São Paulo Biennale. As in Venice, there are both country curators and an exhibition to which central invitations are sent. The São Paulo Biennale is one of the most important art exhibitions in the country and is internationally recognized. Since admission is free, enormous numbers of visitors are regularly reached.
The Arquivo Histórico Wanda Svevo under the current direction of Adriana Villela is responsible for the history of the Biennale .
