occupation

Billu ( Hindi : बिल्लू) is a Hindi film about an extraordinary connection between a superstar and a simple hairdresser. Both have more in common than appearances suggest.

The international theatrical release took place on February 13, 2009, in Germany and Austria the film had already been shown the day before, but in the original language with German subtitles ( OmU ).

action

Bilao Rao Pardesi alias Billu lives with his wife Bindiya and their two children very modestly in a small Indian village. He earns his living as a hairdresser and can barely survive with it. However, his children face suspension from school because Billu cannot pay the school fees.

One day a large film crew turns up for a set - among them the biggest film star in the country: Sahir Khan. Suddenly the whole village goes crazy, after all, everyone wants something from the fame of the superstar. More casually Billu mentions that Sahir was a childhood friend of his. The news spreads like wildfire and all of the villagers are suddenly extremely nice to Billu. The family now has a high reputation and is given rich gifts, because they see in them the link to the otherwise inaccessible Sahir Khan.

The situation is slowly spiraling out of control: Billu himself cannot get close to Sahir and is only turned away on the phone. He also doubts that he will still be recognized by Sahir at all. As the shooting draws to a close, most of the villagers accuse Billu of fraud and take back all the belongings that were given.

The school principal was the only one who could persuade Sahir to take part in the school festival. Sahir uses this favor to give a lecture to the children. Above all, he makes it clear to them how important education is - the first step out of poverty. Nevertheless, they should enjoy their childhood and help one another. Finally, Sahir also talks about his best friend, who was the only one who did not despise him because of his poor circumstances and who even helped him to get to the film metropolis of Bombay . After Sahir established himself as an actor, he wanted to thank his friend and so returned to his village. But there he only learns about his move after his marriage. But he never forgot his friend - his friend named Billu.

Suddenly all viewers are speechless at the name and Billu himself is surprised how much Sahir still knew. The film ends with Sahir's visit to Billu.

German dubbed version

The German dubbing was initiated by the Cologne film label Rapid Eye Movies on the occasion of the DVD release on September 11, 2009 , dialogue director was Katrin Fröhlich . For the film stars Shah Rukh Khan and Lara Dutta , who are already known in German-speaking countries , their assigned voice actors Pascal Breuer and Gundi Eberhard were selected, for the main actor Irrfan Khan it was decided to have a cast that is typical of character, as Steve Carell's celeb Uwe Büschken spoke to the amiable, naive mid-forties Barber Billu.

This and that

Reviews

"Elegantly staged, but not very original drama with lots of dance and song interludes, which the main actor Shahrukh Khan does not even use for the obvious self-distancing from his role persona."

“ Fortunately, the often overdone behavior of Indian films can hardly be found in Billu Barber . The fact that the story does without any romantic banter is a big plus of the film, as this is the absolute exception in Shahrukh Khan films. Irrfan Khan and his cute film family, all of whom play superbly, definitely make up for all the irritations that Shahrukh's scenes cause in the audience. "
