Blitz Club (2020)

The Blitz Club is an internationally known techno club in the Munich district of Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt .

History and venue

The club is located in the former congress hall of the Deutsches Museum, which was completed in 1935, on the prestigious location of Munich's Museum Island 1. The striking building housed Munich's largest concert hall and a planetarium until 1985, and later a well-known IMAX cinema. After that, the congress hall stood empty for seven years, until the current operators of the Blitz Club asked for a possible use in 2016. After months of extensive planning and renovation work, which had to take into account the difficult structural conditions on the Museum Island, the club opened on April 22, 2017. The opening was accompanied by great media interest in advance. In addition to German news media and specialist magazines, international specialist magazines on the topic of electronic music culture reported on the opening of the club. a. DJ Mag , Mixmag and Fact Magazin. The spacious club offers two separate dance floors, two bars, several retreat areas and a smoking booth. A total of up to 800 guests can be accommodated. The Blitz also has a vegetarian restaurant with a beer garden, which is operated independently of the club.

Sound and club architecture

In contrast to earlier well-known Munich techno clubs such as Ultraschall , KW - Das Heizkraftwerk or MMA Club , the Blitz Club is not located in a former industrial setting. It was built into the congress hall according to a sophisticated room-in-room concept in order to offer the most perfect sound experience possible in accordance with the guiding principle "form follows function". The sound architecture of the club was discussed in detail in German and international specialist magazines for electronic music, architecture and sound architecture, including Groove , Mixmag , Baunetz Wissen und Detail . The rooms were developed over months together with the sound engineer Laurin Schafhausen, the architects from Studio Knack and Simon Vorhammer and the acoustician Christian Becker and optimized for the acoustic experience. For acoustic reasons, there are hardly any right angles in the club; beech wood and perforated sheet steel were used for the material instead of the concrete walls typical of techno clubs. In order to achieve optimal room acoustics, specially shaped wooden panels were developed according to the specifications of an acoustician. A seemingly chaotic honeycomb structure based on the swarming behavior of fish, birds and insects is milled into the surfaces of these wall panels. A specially developed computer algorithm calculated this pattern, which gently scatters the sound waves, within a week. The PA system made to measure by the company VOID is considered to be one of the best in Germany and one of the largest the manufacturer has ever built. According to the club operators, however, the optimized room architecture is more important for the sound than the loudspeaker brand. The custom-made Incubus sound system is arranged as a four-point system, so that there is a PA tower in every corner of the room around the dance floor. In addition, there are 360-degree tweeters hanging from the ceiling, which were specially designed for the club and with which the DJ can create three-dimensional sound effects.

The main floor and the sound system were designed in a departure from the stage principle in such a way that the dance floor and the dancers are the focus instead of focusing attention on the DJ booth. The desk is on the edge and on the same level as the dance floor rather than detached from it. Overall, the very puristic club design is largely optimized for the sound and dance experience, and there is no oversized branding.

DJs, music and scene

The operators of the club consist of former crew members of the clubs Bob Beaman , Charlie , Die Registratur , King and its successor Kong Club , who have already gathered a larger techno scene in Munich. The program manager is DJ David Muallem, who is well-known in the Munich scene and who previously worked as a booker for Bob Beaman . Resident DJs are Muallem, the Zenker Brothers , Skee Mask, Sascha Sibler, Julietta , Glaskin and La Staab . In addition to residents, mainly internationally renowned DJs and live acts play in the Blitz Club, including Jeff Mills , Richie Hawtin , Carl Craig , Ben Sims , Seth Troxler , IF , Miss Kittin , Surgeon , Luke Slater , Laurent Garnier , Nina Kraviz , DJ Hell , Sven Väth , Chris Liebing , Monika Kruse , Ellen Allien , Boys Noize , Marcel Dettmann , Ben Klock , Len Faki , Steve Bug , Modeselektor , Michael Mayer , Roman Flügel and Âme . The World League club night, which has been known since the 1990s, also takes place regularly in the Blitz Club. The Blitz was also a venue for the Germany-wide Telekom Electronic Beats Clubnight Series. The club also offers a program of events for the gay fetish scene called Cruise .

Other special features

The club has a strict ban on photos and films, which should ensure that you concentrate fully on dancing. According to their own statement, they also want to be a place of inclusion without a strict door policy. In July 2017, the curfew for the Blitz was lifted, so that the club has been open until the morning since then.

Fire brigade and police operations on the opening day

The club's opening event on April 22, 2017 made headlines across Germany. The hype surrounding the lightning bolt, which was sparked in the weeks before the opening, resulted in a large crowd on Museum Island. Instead of the maximum 800 guests allowed, the club's premises were quickly overcrowded with 1,500 people. When there was no end in sight to the further influx of visitors and the waiting crowd began to block driveways, emergency exits and escape routes for the fire brigade and to push them to the tram tracks, the fire brigade moved in and finally asked the police for assistance. In order to defuse the situation, around 30 police officers moved in, blocked Rosenheimer Straße completely in both directions, cleared the forecourt and sent hundreds of people home. Numerous guests who did not come to the club then criticized the organization of the opening event.

Blitz restaurant

In addition to the techno club, the Blitz also has a vegetarian restaurant with Mexican-Central American cuisine and a beer garden on the outdoor terrace directly on the banks of the Isar. The restaurant is run by Sandra Forster and her team, who had already gained notoriety through several other gastronomy projects in Munich. In contrast to the club, there is no photo ban in the restaurant. The restaurant, its exotic, colorful furnishings and the culinary cocktail and food offer are also the target of reporting in daily newspapers and magazines of the gastronomy critic.

reception

The Blitz Club is regularly the subject of reports in national and international daily newspapers, news magazines and specialist magazines for electronic music, club culture and sound architecture. In the Resident Advisor ranking, the Blitz is rated as one of the most popular clubs in Munich (2nd place, as of October 2019).
