geography

Bockenrod is located in the Odenwald in the southern part of the Gersprenz valley . The federal road 38 and the state road 3105 run on the outskirts. Bockenrod was the loading station on the Reinheim-Reichelsheimer railway for mined ore for the mining operations in this area .

history

The village was first mentioned in documents in 1324.

In 1884 a school house was built in Bockenrod , which cost 8,864.24 marks. Classes began with 51 students on Monday, May 4, 1885 . The students had previously been sent to the school in Reichelsheim. The teacher Heinrich Hallein from Worms taught in Bockenrod for almost 40 years and lived in the school building. On June 1, 1924, the teacher Heinrich Hallein retired and died on January 7, 1929. On March 20, 1940, the last school lessons in Bockenrod were held by the teacher Leonhard Giegerich and the school was closed forever.

On December 1, 1900, a census took place throughout Germany. 165 inhabitants (80 male and 85 female) were counted in Bockenrod. In the census of December 1910, Bockenrod had 145 inhabitants.

At the beginning of May 1909 it was decided to build a water pipe , which was completed in October 1909 and cost 55,000 marks.

Announcement from the "Centralanzeiger für den Odenwald" (Erbacher Kreisblatt):

"With the post office in Bockenrod, Unter-Easter and Rohrbach (Kr. Erbach iO), telegraph stations along with public telephones and accident reporting stations have been combined. Darmstadt, May 28, 1907. Imperial Upper Post Office. JP Dingeldey. "

By December 31, 1918, 18 men from Bockenrod had been drafted into military service. Six soldiers from Bockenrod fell in World War I or died as a result of the war: Sebastian Arras, Adam Bräunig, Georg Adam Götz, Johannes Gräber II, Johannes Hoffarth and Adam Steiger (source: Evangelischer Heimat Bote Reichelsheim). From April 1916, six captured Russians worked as workers for the farmers in Bockenrod, who were guarded by a trooper .

In November and December 1919, the lines for electric light were laid in Bockenrod. On Thursday, December 18, 1919, at 5 o'clock in the evening, the electric lamps burned for the first time in Bockenrod.

On February 1, 1971, Bockenrod was incorporated into the municipality of Beerfurth as part of the regional reform in Hesse , which on August 1, 1972 became part of the municipality of Reichelsheim i. Odw. Came.

Ore mining

Georg Steiger, a lath cutter from Bockenrod, discovered a rich ore deposit in the Kohlwald near Bockenrod in 1880, for which the de Wendel company from Fohrbach in Lorraine acquired the mining rights. A cable car ran from the Bockenrod stop , operated solely by gravity , pulling one full hanging gate down and two empty ones up, to today's four-story shooting range. In the Darmstädter Zeitung of April 28, 1886 the following can be read about it:

“ The cable car, built by the company Adolf Bleichert und Komp., Leipzig-Gohlis , according to a completely new system, which is supposed to bring the manganese ores from the de Wendel mines to the state road to Bockenrod, has been in operation for a few days . The length of the railway, on which numerous workers worked for almost three quarters of a year, is 2200 meters and it has a daily capacity of around 25 loaded double wagons (railroad cars). "

The teacher Heinrich Hallein from Bockenrod wrote in his school chronicle:

“On October 1, 1900, the local manganese ore mine was closed after it had existed for 17 years. The cause was the low manganese yield . The de Wendel company in Saarbrücken took the equipment and machines to Wald-Michelbach and tackled the manganese ore stores there. "

Today nothing can be seen of this cable car. What's left is just a name. There, halfway between Bockenrod and the shooting range, there is an agricultural homestead, which is popularly known as the "Droohtsaals", that is, the cable car, as the cable car ran right past this house.

The Bockenrod stop at kilometer 16.2 of the Reinheim-Reichelsheimer Railway was equipped with a corrugated iron hall that served as a counter and waiting room. There was an additional loading track next to the platform .
