The Bonifatius Route is a 172 km long pilgrimage and hiking trail that was laid out in 2004 and follows the footsteps of the funeral procession of St. Boniface of Mainz to his dream resting place in Fulda . On July 10, 2004, for the 1250 year anniversary of the transfer of the body in 754 , the route was opened with a subsequent two-week first ascent.

description

The Bonifatiusbrunnen below the Kalbacher Höhe

The route is based on the medieval Bonifatiusweg , which follows the path of the funeral procession of St. Bonifatius. With a few deviations, the nearby sights were deliberately included in the route and made accessible. Places where there are places to stay and restaurants were also connected. In some parts the Bonifatiusweg is unsuitable for hiking, as it runs through industrial areas or on the A66 motorway and is therefore rather uninteresting for tourists. Bonifatiusweg and Bonifatiusroute are practically identical from Glauberg . Up until then, however, care was taken to ensure that the places through which the funeral procession is certain to have passed are controlled.

The route is by road signs , with a large red cross and with a small black cross and a black crosier in. Information boards are installed at important locations. The Bonifatius Route eV association offers an official pilgrim pass. This can be stamped at intermediate stations, tourist information offices, guest houses and hotels along the Bonifatius Route.

course

Starting in Mainz, the Bonifatius route runs over the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke to Mainz-Kastel . Then it goes via Mainz-Kostheim to Hochheim , Wicker , Bad Weilbach, Weilbach , Kriftel to Frankfurt-Zeilsheim . Now you are moving away from the historic path so that you don't wander along the A66. The route now leads via Liederbach am Taunus , Oberliederbach , Sulzbach , Eschborn , Frankfurt-Niederursel , Frankfurt-Bonames , Frankfurt-Harheim , Frankfurt-Nieder-Erlenbach to Dortelweil . In the Wetterau it goes via Klein-Karben to Büdesheim , Heldenbergen , Windecken , Engelthal Monastery , Altenstadt , Rommelhausen , Düdelsheim , Glauburg , Konradsdorf Monastery , Eckartsborn , Lißberg , to Hirzenhain . Now it goes over Burkhards in Vogelsberg to Sichenhausen and the hiker reaches the highest point of the route at the Hoherodskopf in the Oberwald area at 679 m. From here the pilgrimage route runs via Ilbeshausen-Hochwaldhausen and through the Herbstein district via Blankenau and Hainzell to the pilgrimage church of Kleinheiligkreuz near Kleinlüder . The next stops are the Schnepfenkapelle near Bimbach and the Schulzenbergkapelle near Haimbach before reaching Fulda with the crypt in the cathedral .
