Bonjour, Kathrin is a German comedy film from 1956 with the main actors Caterina Valente and Peter Alexander . The film is based on the comedy operetta, premiered in 1944, The Happiest Woman in the World - The Bed of the Pompadour by Kurt Feltz and Max Wallner with music by Fred Raymond .

action

Kathrin, Sylvio and Pierre are music students in Paris. Because of her financial difficulties, the bailiff Fogar even had to seize her musical instruments. But he allows them to continue practicing with it in his camp. There the trio meets the composer Duval, who is also in financial difficulties.

Duval offers the three musicians to take part in his new revue . But the jealousy of Mr. Columbus, who is supposed to finance the review, destroys this plan. Because of an affair with the diva Denise, for whom he wanted to take over the financing of the revue, Columbus withdraws from this company and gives the order to convert the theater into a garage.

In order to get some money, Kathrin, Sylvio and Pierre work as chambermaids, pages and waiters in the “Grand Hotel” in Sanremo , where a big music festival is to take place.

After Kathrin incapacitated Denise, who also came for the festival, with the help of a sleeping pill, the young trio performed at the festival with great success together with Duval.

Back in Paris, Pierre organized an advertising campaign without Kathrin's knowledge to make her name known. Impressed by the reports about her interesting past life, which Pierre falsified, Columbus agrees to finance a new Duval revue with Kathrin.

Shortly before the premiere, however, the jealous Denise succeeds in uncovering the vertigo staged by Pierre. Columbus withdraws once again angrily and all the equipment for the revue, which Pierre had stolen from the unsuspecting Fogar's camp, is being returned to the seizure estate.

The first performance of the revue actually turns into an auction at which Kathrin, Sylvio and Pierre can inspire the audience with their skills. Due to the great, unexpected success of their performance, the way to further engagements is paved for the trio. Kathrin and Duval as well as Pierre and Therese find each other in love in the end.

Reviews

  • Heyne Filmlexikon : “A revue film that occasionally even gets a little bit of speed. "
  • Film-Dienst : “ A musical skilfully implemented in cinematic rhythm, which is noticeably above the level of comparable German entertainment films. Caterina Valentes temperament makes the rather thin story about some hits of the 50s forgotten. "

It is noteworthy that the GDR press at the time paid more attention to this revue than in the West German press.

  • The Free Word , Suhl , wrote in 1956: “ One might be tempted to view the whole thing as a parody of the fortunes of countless artists in West Germany, which are dependent on chance, ” and came to the conclusion: “ With the 'being discovered as stars' that is Solved the problem of poverty and hopelessness for the music students; and unfortunately for the film too. "
  • Hans Buchmayer in the Sächsische Zeitung referred to the " bombastic radio and television hype " and the " hectoliters of poster colors " that had been applied to the " reasonably pretty " [e] Caterina Valente
  • The Märkische Union , Potsdam , stated: “ What is impressive is the technical sophistication with which the strip advertises the favor of the audience, how it tries to make operetta-like feats that exhaust all the possibilities of the experiment palatable to the audience. The popularity of the audience proves that he succeeded, unfortunately ... "
