Strike Witches ( Jap. ストライクウィッチーズ, Sutoraiku Witchīzu ) one of Humikane Shimada & Project Kagonish developed and is Kadokawa Shoten marketed media franchise . This includes two light novel , two manga and several anime series (an original video animation , three television series, a cinema film and a short film series) as well as various fan articles.
action
scenario
In a world that resembles the earth in the middle of the twentieth century, Strike Witches tells the story of the struggle to protect this world with the use of new technology and magic. The Strike Witches are a group of girls who have magical abilities. Coming from different nations, they are supposed to fight against the enigmatic Neuroi who carried out the first strike in 1939 .
This enigmatic power appeared again and again in different places on earth and attacked without any warning. The Neuroi weapons often take on a shape similar to that of airplanes and their weapons leave a caustic miasma behind . This not only poisons the helpless people, but the Neuroi transform the affected country into new weapons. This drove the crumbling nations into the seas, as the miasma does not appear to spread over large bodies of water, thus becoming a line of defense.
In this alternative world, Europe or Eurasia and Africa are the regions most affected by the attacks. As the world changed dramatically in the course of the conflict, the names of the states have also changed. For example, Japan is named as the Empire Fusō ( 扶桑 皇 国 , Fusō-kōkoku ) - an old Chinese name for Japan -, the United States as the United States of Liberion , the German Empire as the Kaisertum Karlsland ( 帝 政 カ ー ル ス ラ ン ト , Teisei Kārusuranto ) under Emperor Frederick IV or France called Gallia .
In order to increase the fighting ability of the Strike Witches, each of them is equipped with a Striker Unit , which is attached to the feet and allows them to convert their magic into thrust. This not only gives them the ability to fly, but also gives them better control of their magic in order to target firearms. They are also able to create protective shields against the miasma and other physical weapons. In addition, each of the girls has a special magical ability. Their agility allows them to destroy the self-repairing units of the Neuroi after damage, as they can target their core and energy source. This ultimately makes them the trump card of the people in this war.
Within this world, the franchise focuses particularly on the 501st United Combat Squadron ( 第 501 統 合 戦 闘 航空 団 , Dai-501 tōgō sentō kōkūdan ) “Strike Witches”, which begins a counterattack in Europe.
terminology
- magic
- The Strike Witches (
機械化 航空 歩 兵 , Meaning written: "mechanized flight infantry", spoken: "attack witches") have the natural ability to use magic , which is indicated in a blue aura and makes them grow animal tails and ears ( kemonomimi ). These also give the Witches their respective special abilities such as healing, superhuman strength, foresight, etc. In combat, they use them to move in the air or to create a protective shield. - Striker Unit
- The Striker Units are "suits" made up of mechanical armor with magical propellers and worn by the Strike Witches on their legs. They use the magic of their user as fuel. Although Karlsland also made a jet-powered version called the Messerschmitt Me 262 , this was rarely used because of its excessive consumption of magic. Each of these striker units was modeled on a warplane from World War II.
- Since the Striker Units should have skin contact as much as possible in order to optimize their functionality, the Strike Witches rarely wear more than their underwear. In addition, this is a normal fashion trend in the strike witches world, similar to the advent of the bikini in the 40s, and thus serves as an important fan service element of the series.
- Witches Base
- This is the name of the command center of the 501st Joint Air Combat Squadron. It is a castle with ornate architecture, which was modeled on the Mont-Saint-Michel . Its proximity to the Gallic coast makes the base the starting point of the strike witches in the fight against the mainland of Europe occupied by the Neuroi. After the liberation of Gallia, they move into new headquarters off the Adriatic coast to liberate Venezia (northern Italy).
- Neuroi
- They are a mysterious people who cover the conquered areas with a dark honeycomb structure . The attackers appear in various sizes, ranging from small to gigantic. Their fighters are distinguished by their ability to fly very quickly, to repair themselves quickly, as well as their robustness and energy weapons . As a result, they are far superior to the technical standards of the 1940s, which is why the conventional military is largely ineffective for them and only the strike witches can get over them. The only Achilles heel are the shimmering crystals, the energy sources known as cores in your body. Their appearance was often designed after the experimental aircraft of World War II.
Characters
- Yoshika Miyafuji ( 宮 藤 芳 佳 , Miyafuji Yoshika )
- She is the main character in the series and comes from the Fusō Empire (Japan). She is an ordinary young girl, but has the special ability to heal other living beings. When she uses her skills, she shows the appendages of a Shiba as Kemonomimi . However, she is of a peaceful nature and initially refuses to join the Strike Witches. However, she can be voted over by Mio Sakamoto, who eventually becomes her manager. Within the squadron she holds the rank of sergeant ( 軍曹 ), uses a 99 20 mm machine gun ( 九九 式 二 〇 ミ リ 機 銃 ) and a striker unit, which is based on a Mitsubishi A6M . In the course of the plot in the 2nd season, she changes to a newer model that is based on a Kyūshū J7W . By nature, she is primarily interested in the well-being of the other members, which is also reflected in her cooking skills, in which she pays great attention to healthy eating.
- Her character is based on the Japanese naval aviator Kaneyoshi Mutō .
- Mio Sakamoto ( 坂 本 美 緒 , Sakamoto Mio )
- One of the main characters in the series. Like Yoshika Miyafuji, she comes from the Fuso Empire. At 19, in the first season, she is the oldest and one of the most experienced members of the 501. With the rank of major, she is the highest-ranking member of the association after Lieutenant Colonel Minna-Dietlinde Wilcke. She has a magical eye that allows her to see over great distances and through solid objects like the skin of a neuroi. Her weapons are a '99 20mm machine gun and a magical katana . Their Striker Unit is also based on the Mitsubishi A6M. She acts mainly as a combat leader and instructor. In the course of the first season, she loses the ability to create magical protective circles due to increasing age.
- Minna-Dietlinde Wilcke ( ミ ー ナ ・ デ ィ ー ト リ ン デ ・ ヴ ィ ル ケ , Mīna Dītorinde Viruke )
- Minna-Dietlinde Wilcke is the commander of the Strike Witches . She comes from Karlsland. Your rank is a lieutenant colonel. Before the Neuroi invasion she wanted to study music in Vienna, but because of the war, she joined the Air Force early on. She quickly reached the commanding post as a squadron leader, later as a squadron commodore. Her magic, in which she shows wolf marks, is an increased spatial perception with which she can precisely determine the number and position of the enemy at great distances. During the evacuation from Karlsland, she met Gertrud Barkhorn and Erica Hartmann. Over time, the three developed a deep friendship with one another. It was she who proposed the establishment of the 501st, which she eventually became in command. Your weapon is a MG 42 and the Striker Unit is based on the Messerschmitt Bf 109 .
- Gertrud Barkhorn ( ゲ ル ト ル ー ト ・ バ ル ク ホ ル ン , Gerutorūto Barukuhorun )
- An experienced witch from Karlsland. Even before the Neuroi attack, she joined the armed forces and became one of the first members of the 501st Joint Air Combat Squadron. In the war against the Neuroi is one of the most successful flying races. She is very careful about military discipline, which is particularly noticeable to her friend and comrade Erica Hartmann. Your magical power is called Superhuman Strengthening, which increases your strength and stamina to an extreme level. This means that she is able to carry heavy weapons and more ammunition than the others. It is even possible to carry objects weighing several tons for a short time. During her use of magic she shows characteristics of a German Shorthair Pointing Dog. Your military rank is that of a captain. As armament, it normally uses two MG 42s at the same time. The Striker Unit is based on the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 .
- The figure is based on the German fighter pilot Gerhard Barkhorn , with 301 kills the second most successful pilot of the Second World War.
- Charlotte E. 'Shirley' Yeager ( シ ャ ー ロ ッ ト ・ エ ル ウ ィ ン ・ イ ェ ー ガ ー , Shārotto Erū ~ in Iēgā )
- Comes from Liberion. Your rank is that of a captain (equivalent to a captain). Famous for her beauty and known as a test pilot and motorcyclist who set several speed and altitude records. She is very technically gifted and often works on her motorcycle or on the striker unit. Adventurous and very keen on her personal freedoms, she has been placed under room arrest several times for violating orders, disregarding military regulations and destroying Striker Units. She gets along well with a lot of people, her best friend within the squadron is Francesca Lucchini. Because of her strict military personality, she usually has a rather tense relationship with Barkhorn. Her magical ability, as Kemonomimi she shows rabbit characteristics, is the "speed boost", with which she can increase her speed and the performance of the Striker Unit. As armament she uses an M1918 Browning light machine gun or a Thompson submachine gun. Their Striker Unit is based on the North American P-51 Mustang.
Origin and publications
In a column in the first Comp Ace on March 10, 2005, Humikane Shimada mentioned that he wanted to use his mecha musume ( mecha girl ) concept for multiple media. So he designed next to the first work for the OVA of Strike Witches and the character design for the TV series Sky Girls , both published by the end of 2007. As a result, the characters and concepts of both series are similar in many ways. The Sonic Divers from Sky Girls use more futuristic components, while the Striker Units from Strike Witches are based more on fantastic elements. This makes the design of the characters from Strike Witches more similar to the original Mecha Musume concept.
The first release of the franchise was the manga Strike Witches: Sōkū no Otome-tachi , which was published between September 2005 and January 2006 in Comp Ace. He was drawn by Yoshiyuki Kazumi ( か ず み 義 幸 ), who also draws hentai under the name Matsumoto Drill Kenkyūjo ( 松本 ド リ ル 研究所 ) . This manga was canceled after three chapters. Yoshiyuki Kazumi stated that, according to Kadokawa Shoten, the manga received too negative reader feedback and was too revealing by Kadokawa's standards.
Despite the “negative reader feedback”, a second attempt was made, this time in the form of a light novel at Kadokawa's imprint Kadokawa Bunko Sneaker . This was written by Noboru Yamaguchi , who became known with Zero no Tsukaima . The illustrations are by Humikane Shimada and Hashigo Ueda. The first volume Strike Witches: Suomus Iranko Chūtai Gambaru ISBN 978-4-04-424605-1 was published on October 1, 2006, the second Strike Witches: Suomus Iranko Chūtai Koisuru ISBN 978-4-04-424606-8 on March 1 2007 and the third Strike Witches: Suomus Iranko Chūtai Hajikeru ISBN 978-4-04-424607-5 on July 1, 2008. A fourth volume was announced for spring 2009, but has not yet appeared (as of November 2011).
An original video animation (OVA) was also released on January 1, 2007.
A second manga, this time by Yūki Tanaka, called Strike Witches: Tenkū no Otome-tachi , appeared in Comp Ace 3/2008 on January 25th and 1/2009 on November 26th, 2008. On July 26th and December 26th, 2008 the chapters were combined in two anthologies .
A second light novel series Strike Witches: Otome no Maki ( ス ト ラ イ ク ウ ィ ッ チ ー ズ 乙 女 ノ 巻 ) was also published by Kadokawa Sneakes Bunko by Hidehisa Nambō and the illustrations by Humikane Shimada and Hashigo Ueda. This is largely based on the first anime series. The first volume ISBN 978-4-04-473901-0 was published on August 1, 2008, the second ISBN 978-4-04-473902-7 on March 1, 2008, the third volume ISBN 978-4-04-473903- 4 on August 1, 2009 and the last volume ISBN 978-4-04-473904-1 on July 1, 2010. This series was then continued with Strike Witches 2 ( ス ト ラ イ ク ウ ィ ッ チ ー ズ 2 ), which is largely based on the second anime series and in the Hashigo Ueda was replaced by Shin Kyogoku . The first volume Densetsu no Majo-tachi ( 伝 説 の 魔女 達 ; ISBN 978-4-04-473905-8 ) was published on September 1, 2010, the second volume Tenkū yori Eien ni ( 天空 よ り 永遠 に ; ISBN 978-4- 04-473906-5 ) on the 30th of the same month.
Inside the Strike Witches 2: Official Fanbook Complete File ( ストライクウィッチーズ2オフィシャルファンブックコンプリートファイル) is also the Light-Novel Short story took Strike Witches 2 Visual Short Story: 500overs in Africa ( ストライクウィッチーズ2ヴィジュアルショートストーリー500overs in Africa ) by Takaaki Suzuki and again drawn by Shin Kyōgoku. This is based on the tenth episode of Strike Witches 2 and describes the adventures of the Witches of Africa.
Takaaki Suzuki was also involved with Takeshi Nogami in several dōjinshi (unofficial fan prints), which consisted of a manga part by Nogami and a light novel short story by Suzuki and is also dedicated to the Witches of Africa, in particular Keiko Katō and Hanna-Justina Marseille . Originally, these should be printed within the DVD booklets.
Anime
Strike Witches (OVA)
Based on the light novel series, Gonzo implemented the idea in 2007 in the form of a 29-minute OVA, directed by Kunihisa Sugishima . You Sasaki was the artistic director . The DVD was released in Japan on January 1, 2007 by Kadokawa Shoten .
Strike Witches (series)
Shortly after the announcement of the implementation of the light novel series as an anime television series towards the end of 2007, various promotional items (such as PVC figures) were published in advance. Little by little, more and more details about the series were revealed and the characters presented who had not yet appeared in the OVA.
The series was animated by Studio Gonzo . Directed by Kazuhiro Takamura , who had previously been involved in the implementation of titles such as FLCL , Mahoromatic or Kidō Senshi Gundam 00 , assisted by Ken'ichi Yatani. Based on the designs by Humikane Shimada, he was also responsible for the character design , as is often the case with his previous works. The artistic director was Hiromasa Ogura .
The series was first broadcast on Fukui TV from July 4, 2008 to September 19, 2008, shortly after midnight and thus on the previous television day, ten minutes later on TV Saitama and Nara TV and up to a few days later on Chiba TV , KBS Kyōto , Shin'etsu Hōsō , Gifu Hōsō , TV Kanagawa , Gunma TV , Sun Television , Tokyo MX , Mie TV , TVQ Kyūshū Hōsō and Kumamoto Hōsō . A nationwide broadcast on the satellite broadcaster BS Nippon followed from July 28th.
In addition to the traditional broadcast of the series on television channels, the series was also offered with English subtitles simultaneously on YouTube , BOST TV and Crunchyroll . This followed the series The Tower of Druaga: the Aegis of Uruk , also produced by Gonzo , which was published according to the same scheme. On YouTube and Crunchyroll, viewers could watch the videos as often as they wanted within a certain time window before they were taken offline again. Crunchyroll offered the individual episodes for a fee for download during and after this period.
An uncensored version of the series was offered from September 26, 2008. A censorship had been carried out because of the frequent revealing elements with a lolicon character , even if in such a context it was claimed again and again that the publishers wanted to boost sales figures for DVD sales. The fifth DVD in the series was released on January 30, 2009.
Funimation licensed the series for the US market and began to stream episodes of the series in the uncensored version in October 2009, but had to replace them with the censored versions after protests. However, the release on DVD planned for 2010 is said to be uncensored.
On June 25, 2010 a limited Blu-Ray box of the first season was released. This also contained a soundtrack and subtitles in English. As a bonus she offered a recording of the live event Strike Witches Minna ga Iru kara Dekiru Koto! to ( ス ト ラ イ ク ウ ィ ッ チ ー ズ み ん な が い る か ら で き る こ と! bis ) of September 6, 2009 as well as a 212-page artbook. With a recommended retail price of 44,500 yen, it reached number 6 on the Blu-Ray charts. On the occasion of the upcoming movie, a new edition was released on May 10, 2011. Despite the high, albeit reduced, price of ¥ 36,750, it sold around 5,000 times in the first week, making it the best-selling Blu-Ray this week.
Strike Witches 2
A second season of the television series was announced in early 2009, still under the leadership of Gonzo . Because of the economic problems of the studio, which could not finish the series Saki , the animation production was transferred to the Anime International Company (AIC).
On July 8, 2010 shortly after midnight (and thus on the previous TV day), the second season of Strike Witches 2 ( ス ト ラ イ ク ウ ィ ッ チ ー ズ 2 ) started on TV Saitama and for a while on Tokyo MX, TV Aichi , BS Nippon, TV Kanagawa, TVQ Kyushu, Chiba TV and Sun Television and on the internet on Nico Nico Anime Channel. The production staff remained essentially the same.
Motion picture
An implementation as a movie was announced on October 28, 2010 on Nico Nico Douga and confirmed by Humikane Shimada. It was released in Japanese cinemas on March 17, 2012.
Strike Witches: Operation Victory Arrow
Studio Silver Link , directed by Kazuhiro Takamura, has produced a three-part short film series of 30 minutes each called Strike Witches: Operation Victory Arrow . The first episode Saint-Trond no Raimei ( サ ン ・ ト ロ ン の 雷鳴 , San Turon no Raimei , "The Thunder of Saint-Trond ") was shown in cinemas on September 20, 2014 and was released on December 12, 2014 on DVD / Blu -ray. The 12-episode series was broadcast from October 6th to December 29th, 2016 after midnight (and thus on the previous TV day ) on Tokyo MX , as well as on KBS Kyōto , TV Saitama , Chiba TV , TV Kanagawa , with an offset of up to two weeks . A thirteenth episode, which takes place between episodes 7 and 8, was released as an OVA bonus episode on DVD and Blu-ray in May 2017.
