Brian Strait was born in Waltham and played for the Eastern Mass Senators when he was young . He attended Northfield Mount Hermon School in Gill and represented their ice hockey team in a high school league. In 2004 Strait joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (USA Hockey NTDP), the central talent factory of the USA Hockey Association , and attended Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor , Michigan . In the NTPD he mainly participated in the game operations of the North American Hockey League , where he completed 42 games in his debut season and scored 12 points scorer. Since the teams of the NTDP also act as junior national teams, the defender took part in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2005 and reached fifth place with the team. Furthermore, his teammates elected him to the captaincy .

The following season Strait took part in the U18 Junior World Championship in 2006 and led the team to the world championship there. In regular season play, the NTDP completed an individual game plan, with the team competing both in the NAHL and against representatives of university sports . At the end of the season, the Central Scouting Service placed him in 22nd place among the most promising North American outfield players for the upcoming 2006 NHL Entry Draft . In the actual draft, the Pittsburgh Penguins then selected him in 65th position.

Boston University

In the summer of 2006, Strait left Ann Arbor and the NTDP after two years and enrolled at Boston University . From then on, the defender played for the Terriers , the university's ice hockey team, in Hockey East . After completing 36 games in his debut season, he was named assistant captain early in the 2007-08 season . Over the course of the season, the defender managed to slightly increase his points and reduce his penalty minutes. He also took part in the U20 Junior World Championship at the turn of the year 2007/08 , with the team reaching fourth place and Strait once again acting as team captain.

In his last season, the junior - and thus third year at the university, the Terriers finished the regular season of Hockey East in first place and also won the subsequent play-offs for the Lamoriello Trophy . This was associated with participation in the national championship of the National Collegiate Athletic Association , in which the team advanced through the regional elimination to the Frozen Four . There they first prevailed against the University of Vermont and in the final against Miami University , so that the Terriers won the championship of the NCAA and thus became the best university team in the United States.

Pittsburgh Penguins

After the 2008/09 season, Strait signed an entry-level contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Before the next season, the Pittsburgh Penguins gave him, as expected, to the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , their farm team from the American Hockey League (AHL), where he spent the entire season and made 74 appearances. In the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons Strait also played mainly in the AHL and only came to three and nine appearances in the National Hockey League (NHL).

New York Islanders

After his contract with the Penguins was extended by one year in the summer of 2012, the New York Islanders signed him from the waiver in January 2013 . This happened just one day before the start of the season shortened by the lockout . With the Islanders, Strait established itself directly in the NHL line-up and signed a new three-year contract in New York after six games. From then on, Strait was no longer sent back to the AHL, but was not always part of the NHL squad, so he only played 47 of 82 games in the 2013/14 season.

Winnipeg and New Jersey

After the 2015/16 season, Strait's expiring contract in New York was not renewed, so he joined the Winnipeg Jets as a free agent in July 2016 and signed a one-year contract there. Similarly, the defender moved to the New Jersey Devils in July 2017 .
