Bristol is an American city in the state of Tennessee . It is located in Sullivan County , right on the border with the state of Virginia and has a twin city of the same name . Bristol, Tennessee and Bristol, Virginia share a common city center, each bordered by one side of State Street .

Bristol is one of the three main cities in the Tri-Cities region of Tennessee.

history

Before 1852, the Bristol area was one of the Reverend James King's extensive plantations. His son-in-law, Joseph R. Anderson, a Blountville merchant , saw the potential of a place where two railroads meet. On July 10, 1852, he acquired 100 acres of the plantation, 48 of which were in Tennessee and 52 in Virginia. Anderson planned to found a city and chose the name Bristol for it . In the summer of 1853 he built the first house in Bristol, into which he moved with his family and which also housed the post office and a shop. A bank was added later.

Samuel Goodson, the owner of a piece of land on the northern border of the Anderson land, founded a town called Goodsonville . In 1856 there was a merger with the original Bristol Virginia, initially under the name Goodson Virginia . From 1890, however, the name Bristol prevailed again.

population

In 2000, there were 24,821 residents in Bristol. Of these, 95.1 percent described themselves as white and 3 percent as black. 98.1 percent of the population are native Americans, about half of them are from Tennessee.

Every second inhabitant of Bristol is religious. These are supporters of the Southern Baptist Convention (43.9%), the United Methodist Church (22.4%), the Christian Churches and Churches of Christ (7.2%), the Presbyterian Church (USA) (7 , 2%) and other religious directions.

administration

Bristol is governed under the Council Manager Government system , independent of the twin city in Virginia. The legislative body, the so-called City Council, consists of five members, three of whom are elected to represent certain districts and two for the entire city. The election takes place in odd years, on the third Tuesday in May, on an impartial (non-partisan) basis. The City Council's term of office is four years.

The City Council selects in July each year from among its members a Mayor ( Mayor ) and Vice Mayor (Vice Mayor). The Mayor chairs the monthly meetings and has representative duties, but no administrative or executive power.

The City Council is responsible for the city's financial budget and legislation. It appoints the members of 26 committees and commissions that regulate the administration of the state. The areas of responsibility include the local police and fire brigade, traffic planning, urban development and water supply.

In July 2013, Michelle Dolan was elected mayor and Lea Powers was elected vice mayor. Chad Keen, Margaret Feierabend and Jack Young are also currently members of the City Council.
