British and Irish Cup 2016/17

The British and Irish Cup 2016/17 was the eighth edition of the British and Irish Cup , one of the most important rugby union cup competitions within the Six Nations. Twenty teams from England, Wales and Ireland were involved. The competition started on October 14, 2016.

Attendees

The following teams were eligible to participate:

• the 12 teams of the RFU Championship in England
• 4 A-teams from Wales , in the Pro12 are represented
• the 4 senior teams from Ireland representing each Irish province

mode

There were five groups of four teams each, with each team playing once against each other. The groups were put together according to geographical aspects, so that long journeys were omitted for the spectators of the visiting teams. The group winners and the three best runners-up in the group met in the quarter-finals and determined the semi-finalists there. The cup winner was determined in the final. In the group stage, the teams received:

• four points for a win
• two points for a tie
• a bonus point for four or more attempts
• a bonus point for a loss of seven or less points
