Carl Eeg (born June 27, 1876 in Bremen ; † June 22, 1956 in Bremen) was a German architect .

biography

Eeg attended a grammar school in Bremen from 1886 to 1893. He studied at the technical center in Bremen until 1898 and interned at the Technical University Berlin - Charlottenburg . Eeg then worked from 1899 to 1902 in Dresden in the Schilling & Graebner office . In 1903 he returned to Bremen and started his own business. He maintained close contacts with the Lower Saxon People's Association and the Worpswede artists' colony - in 1898 Eeg even appeared in knight costume for Heinrich Vogeler's painting “Heimkehr”. In 1906 he opened an architectural office in a joint venture with the architect Eduard Runge Am Wall 146 that existed until his death in 1944. In 1906 he married Marianne Gildemeister, daughter of the businessman Hermann Gildemeister. In 1907 Eeg was a founding member of the Bremen section of the Association of German Architects and from 1910 a member of the German Werkbund (DWB) . He made great contributions to the renewal of cemetery culture in Bremen before the First World War and "gained (...) a significant educational influence on the art of tombs of his time" (Hermann Gildemeister). Eeg was a member of the cemetery commission for a long time.

The most important of Eeg's works originate in the years before the First World War . There are orders from well-off middle-class circles for the renovation of existing houses or spacious new buildings, such as the villas for the merchants Strauch and Biermann on Schwachhauser Heerstraße . The Biermann Villa , also known as the Blumeneck House, is probably Eeg's main work; Conservationist Hoffmann: "... a work of unimaginable tasteful and tasteful sophistication". In style, Eeg created a residential building as a total work of art, without his creative spirit being limited by financial requirements. At the same time, however, he also built his own house in the Hagenauer Strasse group of houses , a house of exquisite simplicity. The wealth of his work collapsed when the First World War severely shattered the economic foundations of the bourgeoisie. Eeg never recovered from the shifts that had occurred then; his clientele was financially at the end, without influence and probably also disinterested in the representation of such luxury, as Eeg had celebrated it before the war. - The orders in the period between the world wars are more modest in terms of order volume as well as in design and execution, they have lost their great shine.
