Karl Wilhelm Freiherr von Heideck , called Heidegger, (born December 6, 1788 in Saaralben in Lorraine , Moselle department , † February 21, 1861 in Munich ) was a German painter and general.

origin

His parents were Hartmann Heidegger (* 1753/54), a French officer and amateur painter, and his wife Maria Wilhelmina Kärner . His grandfather Hartmann Heidegger (1677–1739) was bailiff of Andelfingen and co-purchaser of the Bodmer printing works (today: Orell Füssli ).

Life

Heideck, also known as Philhellene , received his first training in the art school under Johann Heinrich Meyer and K. Geßner in Zurich , came to Zweibrücken in 1799 and to Munich in 1801, where he attended the military academy , but at the same time continued his art studies.

In 1805 he joined the Bavarian army , participated in the campaigns of 1805, 1806 and 1809 against Austria , Prussia and Tyrol and went to Spain as a volunteer in 1810 , from where he returned in 1813. In 1813, he took part in the Wars of Liberation as a captain. In 1814 he accompanied the then Bavarian Crown Prince and later King Ludwig to England as a major , was then present during the Congress of Vienna and in 1816 a member of the Border Correction Commission in Salzburg .

In 1826 he went to Greece as a lieutenant colonel on the general staff and in 1827 took part in the unfortunate attempt by Colonel Gordon to relieve the Acropolis . Then in March of the same year he commanded the squadron that was destined to destroy the magazines on Oropos . Later the National Assembly at Damalas , today Trizina , granted him Greek citizenship . President Ioannis Kapodistrias appointed Heideck in 1828 as commandant of Nauplia and soon afterwards as military governor of Argos . In this difficult position Heideck achieved extraordinary things and set up magazines, armories, hospitals, etc. Health concerns compelled him to pay for his release in August 1829.

He returned to Munich and rejoined the Bavarian Army with the rank of colonel. But his leisure hours still belonged to painting; he even tried his hand at fresco with success. The team of four on Helios' chariot in the Glyptothek is by his hand. In 1832 he was appointed a member of the fortress construction commission in Ingolstadt . The elevation of Prince Otto of Bavaria to the Greek throne led him again to Greece. He has now been appointed major general and member of the reign of the Greek state during the minority of King Otto, in which position he has rendered great services to the organization of the state, especially the military. After the king came of age, he returned to his previous position. Raised the rank of baron in 1844 and then promoted to lieutenant general, in 1850 he also worked as a consultant in the Bavarian Ministry of War .

tomb

At the age of 72, Karl Wilhelm von Heideck died on February 21, 1861 in Munich. The Heidecks grave, designed by the architect Eduard Metzger , is located on the Old Southern Cemetery in Munich (Alte Arkaden Platz 35 at Gräberfeld 23) location .

Heideck's grave is of particular importance because it served as an interim grave for Friedrich von Gärtner until the grave in the arcades of the new part of the cemetery, which Gärtner had designed and planned, was completed. Gärtner's reburial took place on the orders of Ludwig I on the day of the inauguration of the new part of the cemetery on February 27, 1850.

His paintings show real drawings, especially the accessories; he knew how to treat the landscape no less admirably. The oil paintings completed after his return from Greece are inferior to his earlier ones; they are treated more hastily, somewhat dry and inharmonious, probably because he endeavored to reproduce the high color tones of the Greek landscape. On the other hand, some more recent rural genre pictures show the earlier harmony and beauty of the sound; the excellent characteristics remained with him anyway. Most of his works are in the collections of the royal family.

Honors

  • In Munich- Neuhausen a street was named in his honor.
  • In Ingolstadt, the cavalier Heydeck of the Ingolstadt fortress bears his name. (Despite an order from King Ludwig I , who ordered Heideck to be written with an i, as was customary in the Royal Bavarian Army at the time, the military administration and the city of Ingolstadt later wrote the name Heydeck with a y).

family

He married Caroline Binder (1806–1838) in 1833 ; with her he had a son and a daughter, Caroline Heidegger (1833–1902).
