Cayuga Lake AVA (recognized since March 25, 1988) is a wine-growing region in the US state of New York . The area is located within Upstate New York in the administrative areas of Cayuga County , Seneca County and Tompkins County in the immediate vicinity of Cayuga Lake .

Most of the vineyards are on the slate soils on the slopes of the western shore of the lake. While the lake is 116 m above sea level , the vineyards are up to 350 m above sea level. The hillside location minimizes the risk of frost damage after the vines have sprouted in spring and autumn, because cold air that arises during the nights does not remain over the vineyards but can slide down to the plain towards the lake. The water masses have a beneficial effect on the microclimate, especially in autumn, and ensure a longer growth period for the vines.

The first field trials of the Cayuga White grape variety were carried out in the vineyards of Cayuga Lake AVA . This new variety was at the nearby New York State Agricultural Experiment Station of Cornell University developed.
