The township is located in the eastern part of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan region, called Metro-East , around the city of St. Louis in neighboring Missouri .

The township is located in the eastern suburbs of St. Louis on the east bank of the Mississippi , which forms the border with the state of Missouri.
Centerville Township is located at 38 ° 34'08 "north latitude and 90 ° 08'29" west longitude and extends over 47.5 km², which is spread over 45.4 km² of land and 2.1 km² of water.
The township is located in the northwest of St. Clair County and is separated in the northwest by the Mississippi from the urban area of St. Louis, Missouri. Within St. Clair County, Centerville Township borders East St. Louis Township in the north, Belleville in the east, Stookey Township in the southeast, and Sugar Loaf Township in the south .

Interstate 255 , which forms the eastern bypass of St. Louis, runs through the township in a northeast-southwest direction . A little further west herein the Illinois portion extending along the Mississippi Great River Road forming Illinois State Route 3 . Illinois State Routes 13 , 15 , 157 and 163 also meet in Centerville Township . All other roads are county roads or further subordinate partially unpaved roads.
In Centerville Township, two railway lines run by the Union Pacific Railroad and the Canadian National Railway , which run together eastwards to St. Louis.
The St. Louis Downtown Airport is located within Centerville Township, the larger Lambert-Saint Louis International Airport is around 30 km northwest.
