Centurion (alternative title: Centurion - Fight or Die ) is a period film from 2010 , the plot of which thematizes the fate of the Ninth Roman Legion in Britain .

action

117 AD: The Roman centurion Quintus Dias is stationed at a Roman outpost in Britain on the border with the land of the Picts . One night the men of the border garrison are attacked by the inhabitants of northern Britain. With the exception of Dias, all Roman soldiers are killed in a bloody slaughter. Only he, who can speak the language of the Picts, is spared and taken as a prisoner to the camp of the Pict king Gorlacon. Here he is tortured and thrown in a dungeon. But Dias can escape. With his arms tied and bare-chested, he flees over the mountains towards the Roman garrison, pursued by the Picts, who finally catch up with him. Shortly before they can kill him, the Pict squad is surprised by Roman soldiers who free Quintus. General Titus Flavius Virilus leads the Romans. This has received the order from governor Agricola to finally break the resistance of the Picts with the Ninth Legion after almost 30 years of stalemate and to bring their leader Gorlacon in chains. The Legion is led by the silent Etain, a supposedly Rome-sympathetic Pictin. But as you learn later, as a child she experienced the cruelty of the Romans who raided her village. Her father was blinded, she and her mother were raped, and their tongues were cut out so that nothing could be reported. She grew up in another Piktendorf and has been seeking revenge on the Romans ever since.

Dias joins Virilus and the Ninth . But things turn out differently than planned: Etain leads the men into an ambush. In the slaughter that followed, the 3,000 Roman soldiers were slaughtered by the Picts, and Virilus was taken prisoner. Only Slides and a few others escape. With the Greek Leonidas, the Nubian Macros, the cook Tarak and a handful of other soldiers, Dias sets out to free Virilus. He leads the men to the Pict camp, from which he himself was only recently able to escape. They succeed in finding Virilus at night, but a troop of returning Picts and the indissoluble chains make it impossible to free Virilus. At the same time, the Roman soldier Thax makes a big mistake by killing Gorlacon's son on his own initiative so that he cannot draw his father's attention to the Romans by shouting. Gorlacon swears bitter revenge on the murderers. The next day, the weakened Virilus is pushed into an unequal duel for life and death against "the beautiful she-wolf", as he calls Etain, and is defeated and killed by her. Gorlacon then orders Etain to pursue Dias and his men with a squad of Pict soldiers and to bring their heads to him.

Despite their great lead, the tracker manages to quickly catch up with Dias and his men. Tarak is the first to be killed by two arrows from Pictin Aeron after breaking his leg while tripping while trying to escape. When Leonidas is struck after jumping off a cliff together, Bothos stays with the boy, while Dias and Brick penetrate the Picts' camp to decimate their pursuers, but only meet two moderately armed soldiers there. One of these men testified to Quintus about the reason for the hunt for the Romans while a knife was already in his body. At the same time, Etain and her men attack Leonidas and Bothos, with the weakened Greek being killed and then beheaded by Etain. Bothos is hit in the leg by an arrow Aerons. Centurio Dias, Brick and Bothos drag themselves on and reach a hut in the forest. This is where the young Arianne lives, a pictorial woman who was once ostracized by her tribe because she was accused of witchcraft. It grants the persecuted soldiers protection and the warmth of their fire. She also offers shelter from Etain and her men and saves the Romans at the risk of her life.

In the meantime, Thax and Macros, who had been separated from the group in wild rapids after jumping off the cliff, try to escape a pack of wolves. The weaker runner Thax wounds Macros in the calf to escape himself, while the Nubian faces a hopeless fight against the hungry wolves.

After two days with Arianne, Quintus, who meanwhile fell in love with Arianne, Brick and Bothos start their journey again and reach the supposedly saving Roman garrison, which is only two days' march south of the lonely woman's dwelling. But this is deserted because Agricola gave the order to retreat. Suddenly Etain appears with her troop. In a final skirmish, the Picts are finally defeated despite being outnumbered, and Etain is killed by Quintus Dias. Before that, Brick falls in the bloody battle by a spear hurled by Etain. The next night Thax meets Quintus and Bothos. Quintus soon suspects that it was Thax who committed the murder of the king's son and thus drew the blind fury of the Picts on her. The next day the men reach a border wall that the Romans are currently building. Thax then threatens Dias with a sword and tells him not to tell his superiors about the boy's murder. In a short, fierce battle, Dias must kill Thax. He then had to watch in horror as Bothos was killed by a Roman archer because he was wearing the furry clothing of the Picts and was thus mistaken for the enemy.

Dias, the only survivor of the proud Ninth Legion, now faces the governor Agricola. This is horrified. In a conversation with his generals, Agricola decides to forget about the shame as quickly as possible and orders the Ninth Legion to be struck out of all records. At his command, his wife hands Drusilla Dias wine. But before two soldiers can eliminate Dias as the last witness to the shame of the Ninth Legion, he defends himself and kills his former comrades. Weakened by his wound and embittered by the treatment by the Roman military leadership, he rides back to Arianne in the forest. He falls from his horse in front of her eyes. But it is certain that Dias will survive, since the film with the words “My name is Quintus Dias. I am a refugee from Rome and this is neither the beginning nor the end of my story ”ends.

Background information

The film was shot in 2009; it was shot in Scotland and England .

Centurion is the second film after 300 in which Dominic West and Michael Fassbender play together. Also, Ulrich Thomsen and Olga Kurylenko already played in Hitman two supporting roles.

No one paid any attention to historicity; not even the name of the main character, "Quintus Dias", corresponds to Roman customs . While with Quintus a common of the few praenomina was used, the gentile name , which is mandatory for Roman citizens (and only they served in the legions) , which practically always ends in -ius , is missing . As the son of a freedman, Dias would have to bear the gentile name of his father's previous owner. Dias is at least a very unusual cognomen , the epithet and third component of Roman names. “Titus Flavius Virilus”, on the other hand, is a correct Roman name that also fits the time of the action; but this is certainly a coincidence, because other names are wrong, such as "Ubriculius". Names were not given by the mother, nor could a gentile name be given in this form. The rank of “ general ” did not exist in the Roman military, nor were the soldiers provided by cooks, they had to cook for themselves. The stirrups used in the film by both Picts and Romans were unknown at the time. The legionaries are shown with relatively short lances, in truth they were equipped with more filigree pila used purely as a throwing spear.

Agricola, the historian Tacitus ' father-in-law , was governor in Germania about 30 years earlier, not in AD 117; and the Ninth Legion did not perish in Britain, as was previously assumed, around AD 120, but was probably relocated to the mainland around AD 130. In addition, construction of Hadrian's Wall began in 120 AD at the earliest, not as early as 117 AD.

Reviews

“Rude, extremely bloody history lesson that makes use of films like ' The Seven Samurai ', ' Spartacus ' and ' Gladiator '. And who lacks variety and sensible DVD extras. But the martial turmoil scores with handmade action and a rousing atmosphere "

“After the rather mixed ' Mad Max ' homage ' Doomsday ', Neil Marshall (' The Descent ') is back in his element in his brutal Roman epic. More comparable to 'Gladiator' or ' 300 ' than to the obvious ' King Arthur ', Marshall uses the historical premise for a survival spectacle of the rough kind in which the great leading actors Michael Fassbender, Olga Kurylenko and Dominic West still have enough There is still room to set accents.
