The Chalaco district is located in the Morropón province of the Piura region in northwestern Peru . The district was established on June 21, 1825. It has an area of ​​151.96 km². At the 2017 census, there were 7,789 inhabitants in the district. In 1993 the population was 10,951, in 2007 9721. The administrative seat is the 2200  m high village of Chalaco with 1212 inhabitants (as of 2017). Chalaco is about 40 km east-northeast of the provincial capital Chulucanas .

Geographical location

The Chalaco district is located in the northeast of the Morropón province. The district is located in the west of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The area is drained to the southwest towards the Río Piura . The northeastern district boundary runs along the watershed to the catchment area of the Río Chira, which runs further north .

The Chalaco district borders in the southwest on the Santa Catalina de Mossa district , in the northwest on the Santo Domingo district , in the extreme north on the Frías district ( Ayabaca province ), in the northeast on the Pacaipampa district (also in the Ayabaca province) and in the southeast to Yamango District .
