Children ( dt. "Children") is an Instrumental - Song of the Italian Dream House - musician Robert Miles . With number one placements in several single charts, it is the most successful song by Miles. Children also founded the music style Dreamhouse.

background

Children was produced by Miles in one night in late 1994. The version was first released on Joe Vanelli's EP Soundtracks in January 1995 , but did not reach any chart positions. Vanelli played the song at a gig in a Miami nightclub , where it was heard by Simon Berry , musician and head of indie label Plattipus Records . He bought the license rights to the song for the United Kingdom and sold them on to Deconstruction Records , a sub-label of BMG Music Publishing , which Miles signed. According to an interview with Tim Renner , then Head of Motor Music , the song was discovered for the German-speaking area by Jens Thele . He played a demo version of Children to Renner , but incorrectly with a playback speed of 45 instead of 33 revolutions per minute. Under the false assumption that he was “finally listening to fast, hard techno again”, Miles was signed. It wasn't until a week later, after the master tape was available, that the error was noticed, but Miles remained under contract.

The recording and mixing of Children took place in the Italian Sound Master Studio . Production is said to have cost only £ 150 in total.

Musical

Children is an instrumental song and is classified in the Dreamhouse genre . The song, composed in four-four time and in F minor , has a tempo of 138 beats per minute . The song includes a characteristic calm piano theme as well as a 4x4 bassline . Miles wrote the song as a reaction to an initiative by Italian mothers who ascribed the increasing number of deaths after going to the disco in the 1990s to the hard, lively techno music. Another inspiration were photographs of child war victims that his father brought with him after a humanitarian mission in Yugoslavia .

Reviews

Children received positive reviews from music critics. Allmusic describes the song as a “wonderful dreamy dance” and a “magical track”.

Children achieved high chart placements worldwide, and this was also the first chart success for Miles. Children entered the German single charts on February 19, 1996 at number 43. The top 10 was reached in the third week of the chart . On March 25, 1996, the song finally reached number one in Germany , where the song remained for seven weeks. In total, Children spent 16 weeks in the top 10 and 29 weeks in the entire charts in Germany. Miles received a platinum record from the Federal Music Industry Association for over 500,000 singles sold in Germany . The song also made it to number one in the Ö3 Austria Top 40 and in the Swiss charts .

In the British singles charts the song rose to number 77 on January 20, 1996, spent a total of two weeks in the charts and then dropped out of them again. A month later, they re-entered in third place. In March 1996, second place was achieved for a total of three weeks. The song spent a total of 21 weeks on these charts, including ten weeks in the top 10. Children sold over 600,000 copies in the UK, earning Miles a platinum record from the British Phonographic Industry . Miles also achieved chart success on the Billboard Hot 100 . He is one of the few Italian artists who have made it into the US singles charts.

Music video

There are two music videos for Children . The first video, which was shot by Matthew Amos, is exclusively in black and white and shows a girl sitting in a car driving past different places. Among other things, one recognizes in the video London ( Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square ), Paris ( Eiffel Tower ) and Geneva as well as landscapes of France, Italy and Switzerland. The second music video was shot in color by Elizabeth Bailey. It alternates between scenes of Miles hanging up in a nightclub and pictures of children playing.
