Life

Christian Gottlieb Schwarz was the son of Rector Paul Matthias Schwarz and his wife Elisabeth, daughter of Mayor Abraham Kunz.

He initially attended his father's school in Leisnig, then went to one of the grammar schools in Leipzig and was then from 1690 to 1696 an alumnus of the Princely School in Grimma (today: St. Augustin High School ), where he had lessons from Tobias Petermann († 1710) , Johann Wolfgang Schönbach (1640–1700), Georg Ermel , and Samuel Jacobi .

After completing his school education, he worked for two years as a private tutor to the sons of the Prince of Saxony's Court and Justice Councilor of Saxony-Altenburg , Johann Heinrich von Schleinitz , Herr auf Schieritz , who with Ida Lucia, daughter of the then Electoral Saxon High Court Marshal Hermann von Wolfframsdorff (1630– 1703) was married and , with the consent of Hermann von Wolfframsdorff, enrolled at the University of Leipzig in 1698 to study theology and philology; he heard lectures from Gottfried Olearius , Johann Cyprian , Johann Schmid , Johann Gottlieb Hardt , Christian Ludovici and Adam Rechenberg . He studied the Greek poets with the rector of the Nicolaischule , Johann Gottfried Herrichen (1629–1705), and the Bible and spiritual eloquence under the guidance of the two preachers Gottlob Friedrich Seligmann and Heinrich Pipping .

In 1701 he received the von Wolfframsdorff scholarship intended for the University of Wittenberg and continued his studies there until 1704; here he heard lectures from Konrad Samuel Schurzfleisch , Georg Wilhelm Kirchmaier and Johann Deutschmann .

After receiving his master's degree , he returned to Leipzig and initially became the teacher of Christoph Pfautz's only son , who also appointed him sub-rector at the Nicolaischule (another source speaks of the Thomasschule ), and was at the same time an assessor at the Philosophical Faculty of University of Leipzig.

In 1709 he received offers from the University of Lübeck , the University of Danzig and the University of Altdorf to teach there. He decided on the University of Altdorf and received the professorship for eloquence and poetry , which over time were supplemented by lectures on moral philosophy and the professorship of history, where he gave up poetry. In 1711 he became rector of the university.

His students included Georg Christoph Schwarz , Johann Ludwig Spörl , Johann Siegmund Mörl , Johann Friedrich Stoy , Georg Christoph Feuerlein , Johann Konrad Spörl , Bernhard Friedrich Hummel and Johann Ulrich Tresenreuter .

During his apprenticeship at Altdorf University, he held the office of dean twelve times and that of rector three times, as well as being the senior librarian and head of the scholarship system.

Despite numerous appointments to other universities, he stayed in Altdorf until his death.

Christian Gottlieb Schwarz married Barbara, daughter of the Nuremberg merchant Weller , on September 30, 1710 († November 20, 1712) . In 1714 he married Dorothea Maria (née Hagen) († 1730) in second marriage and later in third marriage Barbara († March 1745), daughter of the Nuremberg merchant Oeder.
