Christian Papke (director)

Christian Papke (* 1974 in Basel ) is a German director and dramaturge.

Life

Christian Papke grew up in Munich, Darmstadt and Rio de Janeiro. He received his training in theater, film and media studies , German studies, philosophy and business administration in Vienna and Paris. After completing his doctorate, Papke founded the independent group mooncraver in 2002 . He worked with her until 2005, primarily with young people, amateur actors and professional actors, to develop new pieces based on literary models. Between 2003 and 2010, around 150 concerts and readings in the social sector for old people's homes, prisons and other social institutions were organized and implemented.

In 2005 Papke went to the Schauspielhaus Bochum as an assistant director . In 2006 he was elected to the international writers' association of the Austrian PEN Club and was also on its board from 2007 to 2011. Since 2006 he has also been working increasingly in Eastern Europe, both as a director and for the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as project manager of the Talking About Borders project, which he initiated in 2005 and within the framework of which one of the most important dramatist prizes in Eastern Europe is awarded every year. The winning pieces have been performed at the State Theater in Nuremberg (since the 2014/2015 season) . In 2019 the Regensburg Theater will host a world premiere. From 2014 to 2017 Papke was permanently employed at the State Theater in Nuremberg. He has been working there as an artistic consultant since autumn 2017.

From 2013 Papke was the moderator and editor in charge of the broadcast of the cultural program Bühne Europa on ARD-alpha , which was produced by ORF . Since then, Papke ( PapkeFilm ) has been making documentaries that include a. be broadcast on the culture and information channel ORF III.

Papke has worked as a freelance director and dramaturge since 2001 . He has performed his own works, readings and productions at the Volkstheater Vienna , Wiener Metropol , the Viennese jazz club Porgy & Bess , Landestheater Niederösterreich , Schauspielhaus Graz , Schauspielhaus Nürnberg , Wiener Konzerthaus , Wiener Burgtheater (vestibule), ORF Radiokulturhaus Vienna, Hamburg Thalia Theater , Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe , the Leipzig Book Fair , at the international theater festival BITEF , the international theater festival MESS in Sarajevo , the Tirana National Theater , the Tirana State Opera , the Timisoara National Theater and in Israel.

In Bosnia in 2009, Papke's production I don't like Mondays with an ethnically mixed ensemble of Serbs, Croats and Bosniaks of three religions won the prize for the best stage concept as one of the first plays about the Balkan War after the war as part of the international festival MESS (Stage: Alois Gallé). In Romania, Papke's production of Before Retirement was invited to the most important national theater festival in Bucharest in 2012 . Papke's production of Agnes ran for the 175th time at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe in 2018 :

2006–2013 Papke was editor of seven publications in the annual Culture Matters series published by the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs .

Awards

For his contribution to the development of Bulgarian-Austrian cultural relations and to the popularization of Bulgarian art and culture, Papke was awarded by the Ministry of Culture of Bulgaria in May 2012. In 2016 Papke was awarded the highest award in gold by the Yerevan State University for his international and intercultural mediation work.
