Christian Patrick Thomas (born May 26, 1992 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who was last under contract with SC Bern from the Swiss National League until April 2020 , where he played in the position of right winger . His father Steve Thomas was also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Thomas first played for the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League during his junior years between 2008 and 2012 . In the course of the 2008/09 season , the striker was then part of the transfer deal in January 2009 that John Tavares had to move from the Oshawa Generals to London, so that Thomas ran up for Oshawa from this point on. He spent three and a half successful years with the generals. After he was selected in the second round in the NHL Entry Draft 2010 in 40th place, the attacker followed his best season with 99 points in 66 games. This made him the best scorer of his team and one of the most successful across the league, which earned him the election to the league's third all-star team. In addition, the Rangers got him to sign the contract in May 2011, but subsequently decided that Thomas should spend another year in the junior division.
After the 2011/12 OHL season was over , Thomas moved to the professional field that same season and supported the New York Rangers' farm team , the Connecticut Whale , in the American Hockey League . There he also spent the entire 2012/13 season with the exception of a deployment in the NHL for the Rangers. In July 2013 he was finally transferred to the Canadiens de Montréal , who let Danny Kristo move to New York for it. With the Franco-Canadians, Thomas was only sporadically used in the NHL in the following two and a half seasons up to December 2015 with 25 other games. Instead, he was an integral part of the Canadiens farm teams Hamilton Bulldogs and later St. John's IceCaps . During the 2015/16 season , Thomas was again part of a transfer when he was given to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Lucas Lessio . There he came in the rest of the season also mainly in the AHL for the Springfield Falcons and only once for the Coyotes themselves in the NHL.
Since his contract had expired at the end of the season, he signed on July 1, 2016 as a free agent a one-year contract with the Washington Capitals , valid for both the NHL and AHL. Nevertheless, the striker was only used for the AHL farm team Hershey Bears during the 2016/17 season . After a long search for a club over the summer of 2017, he finally found a new employer in the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins from the AHL.
After his sixth professional season, Thomas decided to move to Europe and signed a one-year contract with Rögle BK from Svenska Hockeyligan (SHL) in July 2018 . On November 1, 2018, Thomas left Rögle BK again and received a contract with HK Traktor Tscheljabinsk from the Continental Hockey League (KHL) until the end of the season . The Canadian finally played there until February 2020 before joining the Swiss club SC Bern . Until April of the same year, however, he only played one game before the engagement was ended.
International
Thomas represented his home country at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2009 and the U18 Junior World Championship in 2010 . He won the gold medal with the selection Canada Ontario at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge . At the U18 Junior World Championship the following year, the Canadians did not get past seventh place. After winning the Spengler Cup with the senior national team in 2017 , he was also part of Canada's Olympic squad, which won the bronze medal at the 2018 Winter Games without relying on NHL players .
