Since their daughter Blair is not at home this year around Christmas time because she has joined the Peace Corps , the Krank parents decide, in spite of local Christmas customs, to skip the festival and take the money they save to take a cruise to the Caribbean . This Christmas escape is a great sacrilege for their neighbors. When Blair suddenly announces their return for Christmas, the couple only have a few hours to organize a perfect party for them. With the help of the neighborhood, a perfect Christmas party is finally achieved.

Lou Lumenick described the film in the New York Post as "a loud, crude, and mindless family comedy."

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film was "uninspired" but at least better than Surviving Christmas .

Claudia Puig wrote in USA Today that the film was "one of the worst Christmas films in years".
