Christ the King Church

The Christ the King Church is a Roman Catholic church in Gliwice (Gleiwitz).

The modern church in the form of a basilica is located in the Zatorze district ( Stadtwaldviertel , formerly part of Petersdorf ) and was built according to plans by the architect Karl Mayr (* 1902).

history

As early as 1929, the architect Dominikus Böhm submitted two designs for a new church building: a central building on an elliptical floor plan and a second design with a cross-shaped floor plan. The latter is compared with the parish church of St. Wolfgang in Regensburg, which was built between 1937 and 1939.

After the Böhm designs were rejected by the Archdiocese of Breslau , the architect Karl Mayr was finally commissioned with a new plan in 1934. Only two months passed between the completion of the project draft and approval by the diocese; The foundation stone was laid on September 2, 1934 . After 15 months of construction, on 3 November 1935 the Church by Cardinal was Adolf Bertram of Breslau ordained .

In 1938 the altar wall was painted by Karl Platzek with a monumental Christ the King fresco with the inscription “My kingdom is not of this world”. After 1945 the frescoes were painted over because of the German-language inscription.

In 1973 the church was renovated. Between 1994 and 1995 the roof of the church was renovated.
