Colin McDonald (born September 30, 1984 in Wethersfield , Connecticut ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the American Hockey League since July 2015 . His father Gerry McDonald was also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
McDonald was at the beginning of his career from the 2001/02 season for two seasons with the New England Jr. Coyotes in the American Junior League Eastern Junior Hockey League on the ice. Between 2003 and 2007, the attacker played for the university team of Providence College in Hockey East , which is part of the game operations of the national college league NCAA .
In the summer of 2007, the American was signed by the Edmonton Oilers from the National Hockey League , who had previously secured the transfer rights to McDonald as part of the 2007 NHL Draft . In the following three seasons, he was primarily in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Springfield Falcons , the farm team of the Oilers , are used. In November 2009 he was called up to the roster of the Oilers for the first time and was able to score his first goal in his second and last NHL game for the Oilers .
After another season in the AHL with the Oklahoma City Barons , in which he completed his professional season with 58 points and was honored with the Willie Marshall Award as top scorer, the Pittsburgh Penguins signed him in July 2011 . There, too, the winger was mostly on the farm with the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins and only made five NHL appearances with the Penguins in the 2011/12 season . For the 2012/13 season he signed a contract with the New York Islanders , where the right- shooter was used exclusively in the NHL in the following season . From the 2014/15 season onwards, McDonald played mainly in the AHL for the Islanders ' farm team , the Bridgeport Sound Tigers .
After three years with the Islanders, his contract was not renewed after the 2014/15 season, so he joined the Philadelphia Flyers as a free agent in July 2015 . There he was mainly employed by their farm team, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms , in the AHL, where he signed a contract that was strictly limited to the AHL after his NHL contract expired in June 2018.
