In the summer of 2007, the American was signed by the Edmonton Oilers from the National Hockey League , who had previously secured the transfer rights to McDonald as part of the 2007 NHL Draft . In the following three seasons, he was primarily in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Springfield Falcons , the farm team of the Oilers , are used. In November 2009 he was called up to the roster of the Oilers for the first time and was able to score his first goal in his second and last NHL game for the Oilers .

For the 2012/13 season he signed a contract with the New York Islanders , where the right- shooter was used exclusively in the NHL in the following season . From the 2014/15 season onwards, McDonald played mainly in the AHL for the Islanders ' farm team , the Bridgeport Sound Tigers .

After three years with the Islanders, his contract was not renewed after the 2014/15 season, so he joined the Philadelphia Flyers as a free agent in July 2015 .
