history

In 1984 Jürgen Riebling, Peter Kirchdorfer, Ursula Spitta, Max-Georg Prahl and Walter Schäfer founded Compudent GmbH, which was converted into a stock corporation in 1986 and was considered the most successful new issue at the time. When co-founder and technical director Walter Schäfer left the company in 1990, the share price plummeted dramatically. In 1992 Frank Gotthardt took over all common shares and merged with his company "Gotthardt Computer GmbH (product: dentist's computer)" in Koblenz, whereby the name "Compudent AG" was retained because of its market leadership and the stock corporation (Neuer Markt). Dental information systems were initially offered, followed by software for human use in 1993. In 1997 the name was changed to Compugroup Holding AG.

In order to be able to implement plans for internationalization, the owner decided in 2007 to change the name from Compudent AG to CompuGroup AG, which was implemented around the turn of the millennium. In 2010, Compugroup Holding was renamed CompuGroup Medical (CGM) and combined with subsidiaries that had been created in the meantime under this umbrella brand. In 2013 it was included in the German TecDax. Today (2017) the company has around 4,600 employees at locations in 19 countries worldwide: Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia, Spain, South Africa, the Czech Republic , Turkey and USA. It is one of the leading international providers of software for the healthcare sector.

2004 saw the introduction of doctor information systems to established doctors and dentists in the Czech Republic. The entry into the field of hospital information systems soon took place in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland. In France, Spain and Italy there was also an introduction to doctor information systems. In Germany, the service portfolio was expanded to include several products: medical archiving solutions, hospital information systems, multimedia communication services, drug information systems, laboratory information systems, a referring portal and administration software for payers. In addition, two strategic decisions were made: the entry into web-based patient files and the development of software assisted medicine (intelligent assistance systems for doctors).

Through acquisitions in Austria, the market leadership in hospital information systems and information systems for resident doctors as well as for acute, rehabilitation and social facilities was achieved. The Turkish market was opened up with the entry into doctor, hospital and health insurance software. In the Scandinavian region, Africa and Asia, customers were won in the areas of resident doctors, hospitals and laboratories. In the USA, activities began with doctor information systems and web-based patient files; in the Netherlands the market entry took place in doctor and pharmacy information systems. In 2016, the transition from a stock corporation under German law to a Societas Europaea under European law took place.

In February 2020, Compugroup acquired part of the portfolio of the health software company Cerner in Germany and Spain.

Locations

4,600 employees work for the company and its subsidiaries worldwide. The headquarters and headquarters are in Koblenz am Rhein. A large part of the central software development is based here. Other larger locations are located in Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, the USA, France, the Czech Republic, Romania and Sweden, among others.

public perception

In the nationwide infrastructure project Telematics Infrastructure, the company has been one of the two consortia since 2013, which is preparing the nationwide supply with a logical and secure network specially created for health care. In addition, the company is involved with five other leading players in the health sector in a project funded by the NRW Ministry of Health (the NRW drug account ) to optimize drug therapy safety (AMTS). In addition, it introduced a new approach with the Assisted Medicine software that uses information technology to transfer new medical knowledge more quickly and more comprehensively into actual patient care. The company is committed to training young people and, in cooperation with the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences, has initiated the "Software Engineering in Health Care" course. In cooperation with the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences , the company also supports the newly founded dual course of study with considerable funds.

The company was criticized in the following areas:

  • Dominant market position: Due to its strong mergers & acquisitions activities, the company was accused of having an aggressive market policy that was suitable for establishing monopoly-like prices for its products: In this context, the company points out that with over 180 software providers within the industry it has a sufficient Option for customers to give.
  • Technical isolation of your own systems: In order to make it more difficult for users to change software and to make their own developments difficult to access, according to the accusation, proprietary interfaces are created and the systems are made inaccessible to third-party providers.
