The Corps Rhenania Stuttgart is an obligatory and colored student union in the Weinheim Senior Citizens' Convent (WSC). The corps brings together students and former students from the University of Stuttgart . The members are called "Stuttgarter Rhenanen" .

history

From the trade school founded in 1832, the Polytechnic School developed in 1840 , at which 350 students were already enrolled.

The first corporations were founded at this time. A Teutonia is attested in 1841, but it dissolved again in 1842. The Liederkranz Society , founded in 1845 , became the Stauffia in 1847 . An Alemannia is known from 1848, which already had intensive contacts with the Corps Franconia in Tübingen . In 1852 the Society Teutonia was founded, which represented principles similar to Alemannia. In 1857 and 1858 the Germania company with the colors black-red-gold and the Normannia company with the colors green-white-black were added.

There was often disagreement and argument between the connections. In particular, the relationship between Stauffia and Teutonia was very tense, so that Normannia and Germania decided to merge in order to establish a strong connection that should be able to act as an intermediary between Stauffia and Teutonia.

On February 24, 1859, the former German Melchior Berri founded the Rhenania with 12 other students in the “ Dallinger ” inn . In 1861, through contacts with corps in Tübingen, Zurich and Karlsruhe , it was decided to adopt the corps principle. On this occasion, Rhenania changed its motto to “ For honor and friendship ” and founded the Stuttgart Seniors Convent on January 15, 1862, initially only with Teutonia . Stauffia only joined this in 1863.

Charged to the SS in 1889

Together with the SC from Zurich, Hanover and Karlsruhe, the SC zu Stuttgart was the founding SC of the General Senior Citizens 'Convention (ASC) on April 7, 1863 in Frankfurt / M, from which the Weinheim Senior Citizens' Convent (WSC) emerged in 1867 . The Stuttgart SC was also involved with Rhenania when the WSC was re-established in 1884. This makes Rhenania one of the founding corps of the WSC. In April 1877 the Corps Rhenania and the SC zu Stuttgart were banned and dissolved. The reason was an accident during a mensur between Rhenania and Stauffia in February of that year, as a result of which Paukant von Stauffia died. The Rhenane was acquitted in the following proceedings, but due to the ban, Rhenania took over the name and colors of her predecessor company "Normannia" . It was not until June 23, 1880 that permission was granted to use the old name and colors again. In November 1881 Rhenania had to suspend again due to a lack of members, but was able to resume operations in October 1882 by taking over members of the Ghibellinia Landsmannschaft .

On July 4, 1896, a friendship treaty between Rhenania and the Corps Alemannia Karlsruhe , Visurgia Hanover and Hassia Darmstadt was concluded in Darmstadt. But as early as the winter semester of 1903, the so-called “ white circle ” began to disintegrate and finally ended in a break with Alemannia and Visurgia. In 1898, planning began for the construction of an own corp house on a plot of land on Panoramastraße, the cornerstone of which was laid during the foundation festival in March 1901. On November 24th, 1901, the house, built in neo-Gothic style based on a design by the architect Conrad Prévôt, was inaugurated . At the Stuttgart student art exhibition in 1907, some exhibits attracted attention, such as the interior design designed by Georg Schöttle for the playroom and the chair.

During the First World War , it was decided not to suspend, but to just let the active operations rest. The house was made available to the Württemberg regional association by the Red Cross . After the war, regular university operations began again in January 1919, and with it life in the corps again.

The seizure of power by the National Socialists in 1933 and the associated co-ordination of the student body had an enormous impact on the active business. Thus, the simultaneous membership was from each active member of connecting steel helmet or the SA and participation demanded in their events. At the same time, the introduction of the “ leader principle ” accepted by the WSC undermined the basic democratic principle that had always been cultivated at the convents. The so-called " Aryan Paragraph " also caused a stir and discussions, as a second traditional basic principle of the corps with regard to its members was supposed to be lost here. At the Weinheim Conference in 1934, this was relaxed again through an exception for participants in the First World War, but the Corps brothers affected voluntarily left the Corps in 1935 in order to enable continued existence under the new political framework. Notwithstanding all these efforts, the corps had to bow to the rulers' request and decided on October 19, 1935 to suspend and admit all active and inactive corps boys to the AHV . Together with the old men of the Stuttgart Corps Bavaria, Teutonia and Stauffia, which were also suspended, the comradeship " Götz von Berlichingen " was founded in 1937 in the hope of being able to preserve the corps idea under the new power structure. The house of the Rhenania served as the official comradeship house. After the comradeship moved into the house of the former Stauffia Corps in 1939, the Rhenanenhaus was sold and the inventory was divided among the Rhenans.

Corphaus in Relenbergstrasse

As early as July 1947, the old gentlemen were concerned with reactivating the corps and on May 15, 1948 the restitution was decided. On June 15, 1948, the " Academic Association Rhenania " was licensed by the US military government in compliance with the original corps student ideals. The entry in the register of associations took place on July 9, 1948. Already in the winter semester of 1948/49 an active operation with three corps boys began again and the corps brothers who left in 1935 due to the Aryan paragraph were resumed. Since the old corp house had fallen victim to the air raids during the Second World War, a new house was built on Relenbergstrasse from 1951 to 1952 through donations of money and material from the old men. The first scales were struck in spring 1952 and a Rhenane was second chairman of the AStA in 1958/59 .

With the beginning of the student protests in 1967, the associated social changes and the declining number of active members, a rethinking of the previous values began within the Corps Rhenania. It was therefore decided to suspend the corps for the winter semester 1969/70, but to maintain the corps as much as possible with the strong support of the old men. In particular, the importance of fencing was discussed intensively. Ultimately, it was agreed that the corps should not lose its fundamental character through reforms and acknowledged that the censorship of regulations was a central element. The suspension was lifted for the 1971/72 winter semester.

In 1996 the 100th anniversary of the friendship relationship with the Corps Hassia in Darmstadt was celebrated on the Wachenburg in the form of a Kommerses . It is considered to be one of the oldest existing relationships in the WSC.

In May 2015, the television education channel ARD-Alpha published a report on connections and filmed as part of its research at Corps Rhenania.
