The Cotaparaco district is located in the Recuay province in the Ancash region in southwest Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of 175 km². The 2017 census counted 428 residents. In 1993 the population was 598, in 2007 it was 603. The administrative seat of the district is the 3008 m high village of Cotaparaco with 379 inhabitants (as of 2017). Cotaparaco is located 33 km south-southwest of the provincial capital Recuay .
Geographical location
The Cotaparaco district is located in the west of the Recuay province. It is located on the western flank of the Cordillera Negra . The watershed of the mountains runs along the eastern district boundary. The Río Cotaparaco, a tributary of the Río Huarmey , drains the area to the southwest.
The Cotaparaco district is bordered to the west by the districts Cochapeti and Malvas (both in the province of Huarmey ), to the north by the district Aija ( Aija Province ), on the east by the district Catac , the south by the district Tapacocha and in the far southwest to the Pararín district .
