Criminal is a European anthology series from the VoD provider Netflix that deals with interrogations within police investigations. The series is divided into four different series, each with three episodes. Each series was produced by a different country in the respective national language and published as a separate series on September 20, 2019 on Netflix according to its own country name (e.g. Criminal: Germany ).
The series was developed by British filmmakers George Kay and Jim Field Smith and realized by their joint production company, Idiotlamp Productions. As showrunners, Kay and Smith took on overall artistic and financial responsibility for the project, but left the writing of the non-English language scripts to authors from the respective country.
action
As is typical of anthology series, each part contains its own self-contained plot. Each episode is thus a stand-alone psychological drama , consisting of the questioning of a suspect by a team of investigators from the criminal investigation department. All twelve episodes are limited to just three rooms in a single building per mini-series: a police interrogation room, a darkened observer room with a view of the interrogation through a one-way mirror and the hallway with staircase connected to both rooms. The series is therefore to be regarded as a chamber play .
Cast and dubbing
The German synchronization of the three foreign productions created for dialogue books by Marianne United and Lutz Riedel under the dialogue director of Riedel by the synchronous company VSI Synchron GmbH in Berlin.
The following table lists the recurring actors ("commissioners" etc.) in the three-parters of the individual countries. The additional main characters of the individual episodes ("suspects" etc.) are listed in the appropriate place in the episode list.

background
The series design comes from George Kay and Jim Field Smith, who as showrunners (i.e. screenwriters, managing directors , production managers ) oversaw the entire implementation. All four miniseries were released simultaneously in September 2019.
While the showrunners, as English speakers, are based in the United Kingdom, they had the scripts for the three three-part films set in other countries written in the respective national language and put into practice by local native-speaking actors. However, all four three-part films were shot regardless of the location in the Spanish capital Madrid . There is Netflix's own Ciudad de la Tele studio area .
Episode list
On September 20, 2019, three episodes of each of the four series were published simultaneously on Netflix. Each series was listed as a separate series in the catalog of the streaming service.

Reviews
“In the pars-pro-toto principle, the authors, directors and actors find many clever symbols and leitmotifs that allow the still waters meters of depth. There's more to it than meets the eye , says the Anglo-Saxons: There is more than you can see with the eyes (or in German: at first glance). And in fact, this series takes full advantage of its strict Kammerspiel corset and, in twelve vignettes, skilfully, sensitively and unpretentiously tells not only about bestial crimes, but also about life lies, shattered self-images and yes: also the depths of the human soul. Public television authors and editors are welcome to watch with particular attention - and then please don't just spice up the sets of their productions a bit. "
“The cases meander in an astonishingly varied manner through their three rooms and the possibilities of finding the truth. National idiosyncrasies are conveyed more subcutaneously and more clichéd than actually appropriate for the twelve-part series. "
