Cumbach is a district of the city of Rudolstadt in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia .
geography
Cumbach is located south of the Saale , which separates the district from the old town of Rudolstadt. The southern hills are wooded. On the banks of the Saale there are strips of meadows and rows of trees.
history
Cumbach was first mentioned in a document on November 10, 1327. Until 1918 the place belonged to the sovereignty of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt .
On April 1, 1923, Cumbach became a district of Rudolstadt. The place arose from two villages: Ober- and Untercumbach. Obercumbach corresponds to today's center of Cumbach, Untercumbach lies on the banks of the Saale and was the end of the ferry service, which for a long time was the only connection to Rudolstadt.
Many Rudolstadt women used to come to the meadow on the banks of the Saale with their laundry to let the sun bleach the laundry there. This is why it was given the name Bleichwiese, which has been preserved to this day. Since around 1960, this square has served as a festival area for Rudolstadt, especially for Rudolstadt bird shooting , but also for circus tents and other events, and of course as a large car park.
This is followed by the tube factory, which today belongs to Siemens AG, in which X-ray tubes are manufactured and exported worldwide. A commercial area, a residential area, as well as the Heinrich-Heine-Park up to the Große Wiese also belong to the former Untercumbach. In the meantime, one no longer distinguishes between Ober- and Untercumbach.
In the Heine Park are u. a. the three Thuringian farmhouses , they are considered the oldest open-air museum in Germany. The houses from the 17th and 18th centuries were demolished in the surrounding villages in 1914/1915 and rebuilt in the Rudolstadt city park. The establishment of an old village pharmacy is particularly worth seeing.
The outdoor swimming pool and the “Große Wiese” garden close the former gap between the once independent villages. The original Obercumbach is geographically somewhat higher. Here you will also find a residential area with a direct view of Heidecksburg and a large part of the city. The former orangery of Cumbach Castle is now used as a retirement home. A hiking trail leads to the Schillershöhe, which closes off the Cumbach district in a westerly direction not far from the Saale knee on the banks of the Saale. The Marienturm is located on one of the "Long Mountains" to the south-east.
In the early 1950s, the VEB synthetic fiber factory "Wilhelm Pieck" set up a company holiday camp for the children of its employees around the Marienturm in Schwarza .
