Däniken is a municipality in the Olten district in the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland .

It is not to be confused with the Zurich community Dänikon , the Baselbieter community Tenniken and the Thurgau Tänikon .

geography

Aerial photo from 1500 m by Walter Mittelholzer (1923)

Däniken is located in Niederamt in Solothurn , between the Aarau canton capital of Aarau and the Olten traffic junction . The cities of Olten and Aarau are approx. 7 to 8 km from Däniken. With the surrounding hilly landscape, the delightful banks of the Aare and the nearby Jura, it offers a wide, healthy relaxation area.

The municipality of Däniken measures 543 hectares, around a third of which is forest. Neighboring communities are Niedergösgen , Obergösgen , Dulliken , Walterswil SO and Gretzenbach . The station is 382 meters above sea level, the highest point (610 meters) is in the forest area against the Engelberg, in the southwestern border area.

history

A large part of the Danish municipality was generally very strongly shaped by the Aare. The unsteady course of the Aare was the cause of countless floods and thus a permanent reshaping of the valley landscape. The hills were covered with mighty forests. This is where the first residents settled, cleared and urbanized the land.

The Alemannic settlement was first mentioned in 1273 as Tennikon , but is significantly older. In the village, which consists of small farms, grazing and cattle breeding predominated, with some grain growing. Back then, the farmers worked and planted for their own needs and for tithing. In the course of time, some handicrafts settled in the villages along the Aare that were only allowed to be practiced in the city in the Middle Ages. Due to its history, the village of Däniken grew out of hamlets and quarters without ever creating a historical center. The actual center of the village is now the Erlimatt area with its parish hall, multi-purpose hall, fire station, kindergarten, the newly built work yard with the integration of the former Henzmannhaus including the new children's playground and the Kürz shopping center.
