Loïc Duval made his DTM debut for Team Phoenix this weekend . Maro Engel returned to the series for HWA . His last race was in Hockenheim in 2011.

Edoardo Mortara started for the Mercedes team HWA for the first time after moving from Audi . BMW drivers Augusto Farfus ( RMG ) and Bruno Spengler ( RBM ) and Mercedes drivers Lucas Auer and Gary Paffett (both HWA) competed for their new team for the first time .

With Mattias Ekström , Jamie Green , Paffett (four times each), Spengler (three times), Paul di Resta , Mortara (twice each), Farfus, Timo Glock and Marco Wittmann (once each), nine former Hockenheim winners took part in the races.

Friday

In the first practice session on Friday, di Resta set the fastest lap in 1: 32.763 minutes, ahead of his brand colleague Paffett and Audi driver Mike Rockenfeller .

Saturday

In the second practice session, the Mercedes stayed ahead, this time Lucas Auer was the fastest in 1: 31.712 ahead of di Resta and Mortara.

In qualifying for Saturday's race, Auer was again in front and achieved pole position in 1: 30.849 minutes from Paffett, Mortara and Glock. The only Audi driver in the top ten was Nico Müller in eighth place.

At the start of the race, Farfus, who was in 15th place, stopped and fell back to the bottom of the field. René Rast also started from the pit lane. Auer stayed in the lead ahead of Paffett and Glock, who was able to overtake Mortara. On lap two, Glock also passed Paffett at the end of the Parabolica curve just before the hairpin .

On the third lap there was a collision between Robert Wickens and Tom Blomqvist in the hairpin . Blomqvist spun and fell back to last place. One lap later, at the beginning of turn seven, Green and Engel touched again. All four drivers were able to continue the race. Wickens and Green each received a drive-through penalty as the cause of the collision . At the front of the field, Auer extended his lead over Glock, who had to defend his second place over Paffett. On lap nine, Paffett passed Glock in turn seven, but braked and therefore fell back behind both Glock and Mortara, who had been fourth up to that point.

After lap 16, the first drivers came to the pits to complete their mandatory pit stop . In the meantime Auer's lead over Glock had melted to six seconds. One lap later, the two leaders pitted at the same time. There was a delay at Auer, who was able to maintain the lead. Mortara took the lead for one lap until his own stop, which he then passed on to Ekström. On lap 19, Rast received a warning, which was made clear to him by the black and white flag , because he had driven too long in the so-called “working lane” during his pit stop, i.e. the working side of the pit lane. In the meantime, Ekström continued to lead ahead of Loïc Duval and Wickens, who, however, still had to make their mandatory pit stops. In the "adjusted" order of the drivers who had already completed this, Auer was now in the lead ahead of Rockenfeller and Glock.

Because of his pit stop after the 20th lap, Wickens was passed on to 16th place. After lap 26, Ekström and Duval were the last two remaining drivers to pit. While Ekström found himself back in the field in eighth, Duval only came back on track in 14th. Auer took the lead again with just under two seconds ahead of Glock, who had overtaken Rockenfeller. Ekström, now on fresher and therefore faster tires, was soon able to pass di Resta, his brand colleague Rast and Paffett, and at the end of the race finished in fifth place after starting penultimate.

A few minutes before the end of the 55-minute race, Glock put pressure on the leading Auer, but was unable to overtake him. Mortara also failed with an overtaking maneuver on the last lap by Rockenfeller. In the end, Auer won after 36 laps ahead of Glock and Rockenfeller. The first seven drivers crossed the finish line in less than seven seconds. The entire field saw the checkered flag, the last-placed Green was only a little more than a minute behind the winner. The fastest lap went Ekström in 1: 33.201 minutes.

With the victory and pole position, Auer took the lead in the drivers' standings with 28 points, ahead of Glock (18) and Rockenfeller (15). In the manufacturers' championship, Mercedes (53) was ahead of Audi (35) and BMW (19).

Sunday

In the third practice session on Sunday morning, BMW driver Maxime Martin drove in 1: 31.777 minutes. Behind them were the Audis from Rockenfeller and Green in second and third place.

The qualifying and thus the pole position for the Sunday race was won by Glock, who was second the day before, with a time of 1: 31.406 minutes. Rast was in second place and, as in the third practice session a few hours earlier, Green was third.

Pole setter Glock was able to maintain his lead at the start, while Rast fell behind his brand colleagues Green and Rockenfeller and fell back to 13th place in the further course of the first lap. In the rear field there was a collision between Farfus, Duval and Wickens in the north curve . While Farfus and Duval were initially able to continue, the race for Wickens was over in the first corner. Due to the accident, the safety car was sent out on the track so that the Wickens vehicle could be recovered safely.

At the restart after the safety car phase, for the first time in accordance with the new “ Indy Car style ” rules , Glock lost three positions and fell behind Green, Auer and Spengler. However, since Green overtook Glock too early, he was given a five-second stop-and-go penalty that he had to serve before his next pit stop. Immediately after the restart, Rast and Martin collided, which again affected Farfus' vehicle. For Martin and Rast, the race was over immediately afterwards.

On lap seven, Glock managed to pass Spengler again in the hairpin . At the end of the same lap, Duval parked his vehicle in the pits. In the meantime, Green and Auer at the front had set themselves apart from the rest of the field. At the end of the twelfth lap, Rockenfeller was the first driver to complete the mandatory pit stop. In addition, Farfus had to give up due to the damage to the pits caused by the collisions.

After a little less than halfway through the race, rain began to set in, causing Mortara to spin out of the north curve . At the end of lap 19, the drivers began to switch to rain tires. Di Resta had to wait a long time for a tire, which also delayed the stop of his team-mate Engel behind it. Because some drivers had previously switched from dry tires to a different set of dry tires, they had to make an additional pit stop. After lap 21, Auer, the last driver, had also put on the rain tires. He immediately lost two positions at Wittmann and Paffett after it in the hairpin had braked. On lap 22, Paffett passed Wittmann. Green won the race after 32 laps ahead of Paffett and Wittmann. The winner also set the fastest race lap in 1: 33.614 minutes. 13 of the 18 drivers reached the finish.

In the drivers' standings, Auer continued to lead with 40 points ahead of Green and Paffett (26 each). In the brand classification, Mercedes (92) remained ahead of Audi (79) and BMW (40).
