The Jerico Project (original title: Criminal ) is an American - British action film directed by Ariel Vromen based on a script by Douglas Cook and David Weisberg , which was released in British and US cinemas on April 15, 2016. In Germany it was released directly on DVD and Blu-ray on September 30, 2016 . For the leading actors Kevin Costner , Gary Oldman and Tommy Lee Jones it is the second collaboration after JFK - Tatort Dallas (1991).

To prevent a diabolical plan that endangers the lives of people in Washington , Berlin and Beijing , the imprisoned felon Jerico Stewart, an unscrupulous killer without empathy , has the last memories of the recently murdered CIA agent Bill Pope implanted. This is to reveal its secrets. The CIA's last hopes now rest on the ghost of a criminal.

In London, Bill Pope was negotiating with the computer hacker Jan Strook, nicknamed "The Dutchman", who was able to break into the computer network of the American nuclear missile system. He got all the important orders and can use them to launch any US nuclear missile.

The businessman Xavier Heimdahl wants to get this data and sends his people out under the leadership of the former German agent Elsa Mueller to prevent the transfer of the data from Strook to Pope. Pope, who has a large bag of money and a new identity for Strook, is captured by Heimdahl's people. Heimdahl tortures Pope until his death in order to find out Strook's whereabouts.

Pope is physically dead, but his brain waves are still medically sustained. The CIA knows about Dr. Franks', which transfers brain waves from a dead animal to a living one. He is flown to London with his team and Jerico Stewart. Jerico seems to be the only person with whom this transmission is possible. As a child he suffered brain damage, which is the prerequisite for this experiment.

The transmission of the brain waves seems to be successful at first, but Jerico gives the CIA director Wells no information. Frustrated, he has Jerico taken away.

Jerico escapes and more and more memories of Pope flood him. Since he also sees the wallet for Strook, it is his goal to get to it and to escape with it. In the house of Pope's wife he first looks for this bag, but does not find it. Since he keeps getting headaches, he looks for Dr. Franks to get him more pills for this pain. The CIA suspected this step and contacted Dr. Franks recorded. She can locate Jerico and capture it again.

Jerico notices that he not only has the pure memories of Pope, but that these also evoke previously unknown emotions such as compassion and humanity, but also some skills such as the knowledge of certain foreign languages. The CIA has also registered this and now wants Jerico to take them to Strook.

Heimdahl has hacked into the CIA and can see the persecution and arrest of Jerico. He sends his team to kidnap Jerico when the CIA is with him on the drive to Strook. Jerico escapes and flees to Jill Pope. He can convince her that he has inherited a large part of her late husband's memory. An emotional bond develops between Jerico, Jill and their daughter. In conversation with Jill, Jerico remembers where the wallet is and promises to come back with it. Heimdahl finds out where Jerico is and takes Jill and her daughter hostage.

In the meantime, Strook has contacted the Russian secret service because Pope did not come to him with the money and the new identity as promised. In between he demonstrates his capabilities by launching a missile from an American submarine, but immediately destroying it.

The CIA is tracking the Russian agents going to the Strook hideout, while Jerico is doing the same to Heimdahl and his men. Everyone heads towards a university where Strook is hiding. There is a shootout between the Russian and American agents. Jerico uses the chaos to get to Strook alone. He persuades Strook to manipulate the kill program until both are disturbed by Elsa Mueller. This shoots at Jerico and takes the USB stick with crucial information. Since she no longer needs Strook, she shoots him. Despite a gunshot wound, Jerico defends himself against Mueller and kills her. He now has the USB stick and contacts Heimdahl.

Despite several threats from Wells and a persecution by the police, Jerico wants to take the USB stick to Heimdahl to free Jill and her daughter. Heimdahl seriously injures Jerico and is able to flee the CIA with the stick in his plane. Heimdahl wants to get back at Jerico and uses the program to shoot down a missile at his location. But Heimdahl does not know that Strook, on instructions from Jerico, changed the program so that the rocket flies to where it was ordered to start. The missile destroys Heimdahl's plane.

Several months later you can see the recovered Jerico standing on a beach. It's not clear if he retained Pope's memories and their positive side effects. Dr. Franks sends Jill and her daughter to Jerico, since this was the beach where both of them often stayed with Bill. The experiment works because Jerico can remember Bill's thoughts and can now be integrated into society as a new person.

Production history

On June 20, 2013, it was announced that Millennium Films had acquired a script for the film from Douglas Cook and David Weisberg . JC Spink, Chris Bender , Matthew O'Toole and Gill were to produce the film. On September 13, Millennium named Ariel Vromen to direct the film.

occupation

On June 17, 2014, Kevin Costner was announced as part of the cast. On July 10, it became public that Gary Oldman was in talks to play the role of head of the CIA in the film. On July 23, Tommy Lee Jones was appointed scientist Dr. Frank's and Oldman's participation confirmed. Ryan Reynolds , Alice Eve , Jordi Mollà , and Gal Gadot joined the cast in August , and Antje Traue in September .

Filming

Filming began on September 4, 2014 in London , including in East Sussex . Several actors and crew members have also been spotted filming on King's Road , Kingston . From September 22nd to 25th some car and helicopter scenes were filmed in Yateley , Hampshire at Blackbushe Airport . Filming was also to take place at Croydon College in Croydon , with the building serving as a medical research laboratory and CIA headquarters. In October 2014, a specialist company built a so-called cleanroom, a kind of mobile operating theater, on Surrey Quays Road in London for the scene in which Tommy Lee Jones is performing the operation on Kevin Costner. On October 23, more car scenes with Kevin Costner were filmed in White's Row in East London. It was also filmed in the library of SOAS University of London .

Film music

On December 9, 2014 it was first announced that Haim Mazar should compose the music for the film. On June 10, 2015, however, the film Music Reporter reported that Brian Tyler and Keith Power should write the film music instead . The soundtrack for the film comprises 19 songs, was released in digital form on April 15, 2016 and on CD in May 2016. The song Drift and Fall Again on the soundtrack was included in the list of candidates (longlist) from which the members of the Academy selected the official nominations in December 2016 as a contender at the 2017 Academy Awards in the category Best Film Song .

The film was originally due to be released on January 22nd, 2016 in the United States and on January 29th, 2016 in the UK. However, on August 3, 2015, the release date was postponed to April 15, 2016.
