action

During a class trip to Berlin, the rebellious Roxane (Roxy), who has just been expelled from an English boarding school, befriends the intelligent and eloquent outsider Cyril, who is mocked and bullied by the other students because of his big nose . Cyril, who is a talented rapper and always appears in rap competitions wearing only a gold-colored face mask, immediately falls in love with Roxy. But he doesn't dare to confess his love to her because he's too shy. By chance, Roxy sees the golden mask of Cyril on the visually attractive, but intellectually unsuitable Rick and believes that Rick is the rapper with the gold mask, who she saw at a rap competition. She then begins to be interested in Rick, who does not manage to have a normal conversation with Roxy.

The wealthy ripper Benno bets a classmate for a sum of money that he will get Roxy to bed, and wants to film Roxy and then publish the video on the Internet. Cyril wants to prevent this. To protect Roxy from Benno, he sends her love poems under Rick's identity via WhatsApp and helps Rick win Roxy's heart. At the same time Benno tries to get closer to Roxy. As in the historical novel, chaotic situations develop. When Benno does not shrink from trying to make Roxy submissive in a Berlin discotheque with a drug mixed in a beer, which fails, however, a fight breaks out in the discotheque. Benno breaks Rick's nose, so he has to be taken to a hospital, and Roxy bruises in both eyes. After returning from the class trip, there is an argument between Cyril and Benno at school, in which Cyril rapes Benno in front of the entire class and Roxy realizes that Cyril must be the rapper with the mask. In the final scene, Roxy and Cyril compete against each other in a rap competition. Cyril takes off his mask and both of them rap and confess their love for each other.

Age rating

In Germany it was approved by the FSK from the age of 12, but allowed from the age of 6 if accompanied by the parents. The statement of reasons for release states: “Children from the age of 12 are able to understand the topics of the film (especially the bullying issue) and to deal with them appropriately. The sometimes crude language as well as some dramatic scenes are within a framework that does not overwhelm or impair viewers from the age of 12. The romantic framework as well as numerous song and dance sequences that seem almost magical, also offer ample opportunity for relief. "

Reviews and grossing results

Margret Köhler from the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung describes The Most Beautiful Girl in the World as a touching romantic comedy that takes its young audience seriously. Aron Lehmann has the right instinct and has found the right scriptwriters in Lars Kraume and Judy Horny . They rely on hard hip-hop beats, fast-paced sayings and young, talented actors who throw themselves into the roles with verve, send their love messages via crisp WhatsApp messages, charm them with the word dynamics of rap music instead of minnesong, according to Köhler : "When Cyril appears in battle rap with a golden mask out of fear of new malice, stirs up the hip-hop scene as a stranger and disappears after the victory, you sense his tremendous strength and creativity, but also deep vulnerability." In contrast to In other teen films for the cinema-savvy target group, the director avoids the often usual voyeuristic tracking shots over well-formed body curves, says Köhler. The pivotal point of the film, however, is the music, and the music producer Konstantin "Djorkaeff" Scherer and the songwriter Robin Haefs did a great job with romantic and hard lyrics that touch audiences beyond the young target audience, according to the film critic. The encouraging and clear message of the film is “don't care about external appearances, be yourself”, which is not only good for young people, according to Köhler.

The German Film and Media Review Sided The most beautiful girl in the world with the predicate particularly valuable . In the jury's statement, it is said that the story of the French cadet Cyrano de Bergerac , who goes to war, is transplanted to a German school, is only consistent, because the students win and lose their battles in the classroom today: " The film credibly hits the tone that prevails among young people. It is also very pleasant that here the teachers and parents are not drawn as caricatures, as is very often the case, who have never sent an email and are otherwise hopelessly inferior to the young people. "

In Germany the film had around 529,000 admissions.
