Dave Simpson (born January 11, 1983 in Toronto , Ontario as David Anthony Simpson Knight ) is a Canadian football player on the position of a midfielder and winger , who can also be used as a striker . Due to an illness of the very rare macular degeneration Stargardt's disease , which he was diagnosed with at the end of December 2010, he largely resigned from the football field and has since been considered semi-retired . After a career in seven different countries, where he was mostly only used sporadically at professional level, the offensive all-rounder switched to the newly founded Mississauga Eagles FC in 2011 on an amateur basis, with play in the Canadian Soccer League .
Club career
Started his career in Canada and moved to Germany
Like many other players, Dave Simpson, born in Toronto, Ontario in 1983, began his active career with the successful North Scarborough Soccer Club , or NSSC for short . In 1997 he fell on international observers at the Welsh International Super Cup , which gave him a trial training session at Southampton FC .
He stayed at the NSSC until he was 17, and at the same time was also active at Erin Mills SC and the partly affiliated Professional Soccer Academy ( PSA ) in Toronto. With the PSA , Simpson made the leap into international football. So he came to Stuttgart with a team in 2001 . There he was discovered by scouts from VfB Stuttgart , who signed the young Canadian, who is of Barbadian descent through his parents , as a junior player. He previously convinced the VfB Stuttgart coach in a training or friendly match, who let him play for half of his team.
Slow breakthrough in professional football
In 2002 Simpson, who was mostly still used as a striker at the time, was accepted by the Belgian club Royal Antwerp . He had to as a farm team of Manchester United but left again in the summer to be viewed Club. For the game year 2003 Simpson returned to his native country and came to Hamilton Thunder in the Canadian Professional Soccer League for his first regular appearances in men's football. With the team from Hamilton, Ontario , he was used in eleven league games and brought it to four league goals. In the Western Conference of the league he was able to take first place with his team, in the subsequent play-off, however, he was eliminated with the team in the semifinals. Contract disputes finally let him miss the entire 2004 season, with some of which he continued to train privately. In 2005, a change to the Toronto Lynx franchise followed in the USL First Division, which at that time was still considered to be second class . With this team he landed in the final ranking on the last place in the table. He was used in 18 championship games, in which he came three times to scoring. Even before the team started the 2006 season, Simpson left the club for Europe .
Return to Europe
In his career so far, sometimes surprisingly, he made the jump to the top Hungarian league , where he was signed by the Lombard Pápa TFC . The team rose at the end of the 2005/06 season in the second division . Simpson had made 13 league appearances and one hit by this time. For the 2006/07 season he moved to the Czech Republic to join the traditional club and record champions Sparta Prague . After three missions in the third-class B team, he was loaned to SK Kladno , where he was able to record regular appearances and took eleventh place in the table. After a concussion, he missed several games. After he was initially used in the attacking midfield, he finally changed his position and was then mainly in the defensive and central midfield in use.
After returning to Prague at the end of the 2006/07 season , he extended his contract for another two years. In the 2007/08 season he had other missions in the B team before he was given back on loan for the winter break. This time the Canadian was transferred to SIAD Most , where he was mostly used from the start. After a car accident, Simpson dropped out for two weeks and then couldn't find his way back into the team. In the meantime he was associated with the English football club Nottingham Forest , where he had a short stay in early May 2008. In autumn 2008 he moved back to Hungary for Dunaújváros FC . For the club, he completed a few league games in the second division and was also successful as a goalscorer before the club stopped playing prematurely in March 2009 and Simpson was forced to make another move. Within the NB II he moved to DAC 1912 FC , where he played the rest of the 2008/09 season and scored six goals in just over a dozen missions. When he left the club at the end of the season, completed a trial training session at the Danish club Viborg FF , and was among other things at Zinedine Zidane's charity soccer tour Zidane & Friends in Vancouver .
Moved to Thailand and relegated to amateur football
After several months without a club, the Canadian joined the Thai club FC Chonburi in the summer of 2010 . With the team he was able to win the 2010 FA Cup . For a short time he also played on loan at FC Samut Songkhram . At the beginning of 2011 Simpson was diagnosed with the very rare macular degeneration Stargardt's disease in his Canadian homeland . Because of this eye disease, he largely resigned from the football field and soon afterwards also confirmed his semi-retirement , so to speak, his half-retirement as a football player. Nevertheless, in 2011 he moved to the newly founded Mississauga Eagles FC with play in the Canadian Soccer League . The club emerged mainly from a cooperation with Simpsons former club, the Erin Mills SC . In 2012 he moved to Brantford Galaxy .
National team
Dave Simpson was first used on April 11, 2001 in a Canadian youth national selection in an unofficial game against a French selection of players from FC Lorient and Stade Rennes . In this encounter he was in action for the full duration of the game.
Simpson made his official international debut in late July / early August 2003 at the US Soccer Festival in Houston , Texas . He came on as a substitute on July 27, 2003 in a 2-1 win over his senior colleagues from Honduras for the second half. In the further course of the tournament, the offensive all-rounder followed three more missions (among others against the U-20 selections of El Salvador and the USA ), and also an unofficial mission against a selection team from the east of the USA. In the 3-0 win over the national team from El Salvador, Simpson also scored his first and only goal for the junior national team of Canada. At Torneo Mondialito , a youth football tournament, he completed his last game for a youth team from Canada on October 19, 2003 in a 1-0 defeat against the Paraguayan U-20 national team.
After more than four years of absence, Simpson was called up again in 2008 for his home country, this time for the senior team of Canada . He was used in the international friendly against Martinique on January 30, 2008, a narrow 1-0 win, for the first time in the senior team of his country of birth. In this game he was substituted on in the 58th minute for Charles Gbeke . Shortly after his debut game, Simpson was used on February 3, 2008 in an encounter against Vejle BK in front of almost 100 visitors. In the unofficial game against the Danish club, the offensive player was used again for Gbeke , who was mainly used as a striker .
