The Sandman is a German psychological thriller directed by Nico Hofmann and starring Götz George , which was filmed for television in 1995 . The film was produced by Westdeutsche Universum-Film GmbH for the German private broadcaster RTL II .
action
The young, aspiring television editor Ina Littmann is given the opportunity to do research for the first time on her own responsibility for a TV report for the talk show Eye to Eye on the private broadcaster DTV . Her job is to write a report on Henry Kupfer, a rehabilitated prostitute killer who served eight years in prison for manslaughter and is now a best-selling author of books about serial killers . Kupfer is just about to publish his new work “Der Kannibale”. The book is about a blacksmith who killed several children at the beginning of the 20th century and in whose house Kupfer now lives.
During her research, Littmann becomes aware of several prostitute murders in the recent past, which seem to have been committed in the same bestial manner as Kupfer committed his murder at the time . After discovering the supposedly last crime scene, she is convinced of Kupfer's culprit. Littmann is therefore looking for a sensation. It intends to copper in the live broadcast television program Face to face expose. However, she does not want to succeed completely because Kupfer does not admit any of the murders in front of the cameras.
Later that evening, Kupfer pays Littmann a visit to her apartment, cuffs her to her bed, threatens her with a razor - the other murders were also used with such a weapon - and begins to cut her clothes off. Suddenly he unties her and says the whole thing was just a promotion for his new book and thanks the scared journalist for the publicity . Then his supposedly last victim, in reality his beloved, comes over for a jump to pick him up.

Reviews
“In addition to the Bavarian TV Prize, Nico Hofmann's brilliant thriller has also been awarded the Adolf Grimme Prize for directing and leading actor twice. Götz George, Karoline Eichhorn and Barbara Rudnik are a perfect trio of actors who create an atmosphere that won't let you go for the duration of the film. "
“Thriller about a television editor who is researching a program about a crime writer and suspects that the author himself has committed a few murders. A (also cynical) examination of the media consumer society, carried out by good actors and staged with the intention of achieving cinema quality. "
“A young editor is hoping for the big media coup with the help of a supposed serial killer. Dense script, effective direction and a top cast with old star Götz George and newcomer Karoline Eichhorn make “The Sandman” an innovative piece of high-gloss television that was never seen in the mid-90s. "
