Dido ( pronunciation : [ ˈdaɪdoʊ ]; born December 25, 1971 in Kensington , London ; actually: Dido Florian Cloud de Bounevialle O'Malley Armstrong ) is a British singer and songwriter of French - Irish descent.

biography

Dido first attended the City of London School for Girls and then Westminster School (both historic private schools). After her interest in music was aroused, she went to the Guildhall School of Music in London , where she learned to play the piano and violin. She is the sister of music producer Rollo Armstrong ( Faithless , Dusted ). Dido has been married to British screenwriter Rohan Gavin since 2010 . In 2011 their son was born.

Artistic career

Before her solo career, Dido was a background singer with Faithless , her brother Rollo's band. During this time she recorded a few pieces that were released on the album Odds and Ends by her record company for promotional purposes. These pieces can also be found on her debut album No Angel (1999). Commercial success initially failed to materialize and Dido roared across America. The song Thank You became the soundtrack of the film Sliding Doors in 1998 . Dido had the final commercial breakthrough when Eminem - with her consent - used a sample of her song Thank You as the basis for his hit Stan . As a result, the album and the singles Here with Me (the title track of the television series Roswell ) and Thank You became million sellers. In 2002 Dido recorded the song Feels Like Fire with Carlos Santana , which was released on Santana's album Shaman .

Dido's second album Life for Rent was released in September 2003. The first single, White Flag , was a number one hit in Germany, Austria and Italy in autumn 2003. In August 2004, Life for Rent had been in the top 100 album charts for more than 40 weeks and was awarded four times platinum in Germany (for 800,000 copies sold in Germany).

In 2004 Dido went on a world tour and also performed in Germany and Austria. At the Live 8 concert on July 2, 2005, she sang in a duet with Youssou N'Dour in London and Versailles . Also in July 2005 the first live album Live at Brixton Academy was released .

In the second half of 2006, Dido began producing a third album, which should be released in 2007. However, on December 22, 2006, her father William Armstrong died, so that the publication was delayed. The album Safe Trip Home was only released in mid-November 2008. On this album, which entered the album charts at number 3 in Germany, Dido worked closely with producer Jon Brion . He encouraged her to record the soundtracks for drums and piano herself. A new, previously unreleased Dido song appeared on the soundtrack to the movie Sex and the City 2 in 2010: Everything to Lose.

In 2011 she was nominated for an Oscar together with AR Rahman and her brother for the song If I Rise .

In 2013 Dido released her fourth album Girl Who Got Away with the singles No Freedom and End of Night . In the same year the compilation Greatest Hits was released .

Her fifth studio album, Still on My Mind , was released on March 8, 2019.
