Career

societies

From the age of seven to 13, Frey was active in football for the Oberallgäuer TSV Wiggensbach , the gymnastics and sports club based in his birthplace. This was followed by three seasons at FC Kempten and four at FC Augsburg before he was awarded a licensed player's contract with FC Bayern Munich in 1992 . In his first professional season 1992/93 he was not used in the Bundesliga . He made his debut in the second half of the following season, when he was in the starting line-up on February 19, 1994 (22nd matchday) in a 3-1 win in the away game against VfB Leipzig . He scored his first professional goal on March 12, 1994 (25th matchday) in a 3-1 win in the away game against SG Wattenscheid 09 with the goal of 3-0 in the 69th minute. In the 1994/95 season he was a midfielder in the regular team, not only made 27 league appearances (2 goals), but also seven appearances in the Champions League . In 1995/96 he was used six times in the UEFA Cup competition, but was only used eight times in the league, which prompted him to switch to league rivals SC Freiburg . After only one season he was signed by the Bundesliga club Werder Bremen, for whom he played only 30 games in four years - with decreasing numbers due to a susceptibility to injury. During this time he was also used in eight games (2 goals) for the UI Cup ( 1998 ) and four games (1 goal) for the DFB Cup .

Frey changed for the 2001/02 season for the last time within the league; this time to 1. FC Nürnberg , for which he was active for two years in the top division and last year in the 2. Bundesliga but was no longer able to work his way up to the team after a meniscus operation. He then ended his career after 12 years as a professional, 128 first division games and eight goals, as well as 11 games and one goal for the DFB Cup and 21 international cup games.

National team

On January 29, 1991 Frey made his debut in the U-20 national team , which won 3-0 in Maspalomas against the selection of Portugal. Three days later, he was also used in Las Palmas in the 2-1 defeat against Spain. His last international match for this national team, which lost 4-1 to Portugal on January 23, 1995 in Maspalomas, was crowned with his only goal in the DFB jersey .

Frey played five games for the U-21 national team in 1993 , where he played his first on March 23 in Baunatal in the qualifier for the 1994 European Championship in an 8-0 win against Ireland . This was followed by the international matches against the national teams of Denmark (4: 1; on April 13th in Rønne ), Greece (3: 3; on September 21st in Ulm ), Denmark (0: 1; on October 12th in Celle ) and Spain (1: 3; December 14th in Cordoba ).
