Dinner for Spinners (Original title: Le Dîner de cons ) is a French comedy film directed by Francis Veber from 1998 with Thierry Lhermitte , Francis Huster and Jacques Villeret .

action

Several wealthy citizens meet regularly for a "dinner". Everyone has to bring a "sucker" with them to make fun of while eating. The publisher Brochant is still looking for a fool this week and finds one through a friend, the alleged super fool Pignon, who is a tax officer and makes the Eiffel Tower , bridges and vehicles out of matches . Brochant orders Pignon to take him to dinner. Before Pignon arrives, Brochant pinches his sciatic nerve and is unable to go to dinner.

When Pignon then shows up, the evening is completely different from what Brochant had imagined. Brochant wants to get rid of Pignon, but he has no chance against the good-natured "helpful" Pignon. Pignon confuses Brochant's wife and lover, gets them both to leave, and finally brings the tax inspector into his house because he, a colleague, knows the address of a well-known seducer who may have Brochant's wife with him. However, this is not the case, the tax inspector's wife is with him. Instead, Brochant's wife was seriously injured in a traffic accident and is in the hospital. Pignon finally learns what his role in the game should actually be. Nevertheless, he arranged - and botched - a reconciliation between Brochant and his wife. The tax inspector immediately recognizes that Brochant is a notorious tax evader, whom he announces that he will be visiting on an official mission the next morning.

Trivia

  • The “weirdo” bears the same name (François Pignon) as the “annoyance” in the 2008 film The Killer and the Annoyance, also made by Francis Veber (in which Patrick Timsit was the actor).
  • To keep the situation comedy , two names have been changed in the German version:
    • Brochants mistress Marlène Sasseur is in the German version Marlène dutante . Pignon mistakenly thinks she is Brochants aunt, in the original French version his sister.
    • Brochants friend Juste Leblanc is called Nur Leblanc in the German version . In both versions, Pignon Brochant asks whether Leblanc has no first name.

Reviews

“The punch lines fall in quick succession in this witty comedy, in which an unsuspecting clumsy man teaches a snob fear and which has over eight million viewers in France. Francis Veber staged here after his first own play that (sic!) Had its world premiere in 1993. "

"Viscous comedy with only a few sparkling gags and overwhelmed leading actors."

“It is the subject of almost all of Francis Veber's films, but never has a comedy of his been more accurate than Le diner de cons , because thanks to a great acting ensemble every joke works. [...] Filled with crisp dialogues that flow seamlessly into each other, well-humored actors, fresh ideas, a sensitive message, Dinner for Spinner is one of the great comedies in film history. Lovers of dialog-heavy situation comedy will find it difficult to avoid this fireworks display, because this comedy is as good as its reputation. "
