Dorothy-Marie "Dot" Jones (born January 4, 1964 in Turlock , California ) is an American actress and former athlete .

Personal life and sports career

Dot Jones, also known as Dot-Marie Jones, grew up as the youngest of six children in Hilmar , California and participated in weight training events in her youth. After a spurt of just under 7 inches by 1.93 m, she began lifting weights , initially to strengthen her weakened back. From 1983 Jones operated armwrestling and won the first of their 15 world championship titles at the age of 19, and she also acquired nine national championship titles.

After high school , Jones attended Modesto Junior College and Fresno State University , for funding she received an athletics scholarship. In addition to weightlifting and arm wrestling, Jones also competed in the shot put . In that sport, she was an All-American electoral champion and was the state champion of California from 1983 and 1984 and set the national record in the junior college age group, which existed from 1983 to 1990. In 1988 Jones qualified for the Summer Olympics in the shot put.

In the course of her athletic career, Jones sustained eleven knee injuries and is only 1.91 m tall. A knee operation would make up for this. In addition to sport, she worked as a youth counselor in the youth penal system.

After a three-year relationship, Jones married her partner, ten years her junior, in December 2013, who brings two children from a previous marriage into the relationship.

Acting career

Jones gained first acting experience in 1992 in the competition program Knights and Warriors in which she appeared as Lady Battleaxe , to which role Jones was persuaded by Shirley Eson of American Gladiators . She turned down offers for professional wrestling because it was too much for her ("too fakey").

In the following years she had various extras roles such as 1994 in an episode of the television series Full House as well as minor appearances in films and series. Mostly she played roles that were cast according to her physical stature. In the series A Terribly Nice Family , she starred repeatedly in five episodes. In 1998, Jones had her first film role in Patch Adams . From 2001 onwards she appeared in five episodes of the sitcom Lizzie McGuire as coach Kelly .

Jones has been on a variety of television series including What's Up, Dad? , My Name Is Earl , iCarly or Desperate Housewives , which made them famous. She also had recurring appearances in the award-winning series Nip / Tuck and played in the last two episodes as well as the final television film for the series Prison Break . She also appeared in the 2010 Hawthorne hospital series for five episodes .

According to their roles in Nip / Tuck and the pilot turned TV movie Pretty / Handsome , both of Glee -creator Ryan Murphy produced, Jones in 2010 was the role of Shannon Beiste in Glee . Producer Brad Falchuk met her by chance while shopping and offered her a role in Glee , after her acceptance the character was created for her, who has played Jones since the beginning of the second season. For this role, Jones received an Emmy nomination for Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series (Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series) in 2011 , 2012 and 2013 . In the sixth and final Glee season, Jones was one of the main cast of the series.
