Dragon Ball Z: The Garlic Jr.'s Death Zone. is the first feature film for the series Dragon Ball Z , which is based on the manga series Dragon Ball by the mangaka Akira Toriyama . His plot provides the template for a section of the anime series that begins after the local Freezer saga. The film was released on DVD in Germany in 2004 . Carlsen Comics brought out the associated anime comics back in 2001 (issues 17-20).

The plot of the film begins some time after the end of the anime series Dragon Ball , but before the appearance of Goku's brother Raditz and the start of the series Dragon Ball Z :

Son-Goku is now happily married to Chichi and has a son with her, whom he named after his grandfather Son-Gohan. In the meantime, Piccolo, who has been Goku's archenemy since the last major martial arts tournament, is training to kill him in another duel.

Danger threatens when Garlic Jr. shows up on earth to search for the seven Dragon Balls so that he may gain eternal life. However, this is only part of his plan to avenge his father, who long ago competed with the present God for the position and was defeated by him.

Goku and his archenemy Piccolo face themselves as the strongest earthly fighters Garlic jr. and his henchmen, but seem to be unable to do anything against a now immortal enemy. As Garlic Jr. finally wants to banish his adversaries in the dead zone ( Deadzone ), Gohan's powers awaken. He can Garlic Jr. does not kill, but puts him in his own death zone.

The film was released in Japan in 1989 and premiered on July 15. A few years later the film was released in the United States , Mexico , Spain and France . In Germany, the film was released on April 3, 2004 out of sequence as the last of all published Dragon Ball Z movies. The edited French version served as a template, each with its own opening and ending. For the dubbing, the speakers already heard in the series and the previously published films were used. In addition to the regular German-language sound, the DVD released by Polyband contains the original Japanese sound as well as a sound track synchronized by fans, also known as fandub .
