Live and act
Ed O'Neill was born Edward Leonard O'Neill on April 12, 1946 in Youngstown, Ohio. The son of Edward Philip O'Neill and Ruth Ann O'Neill attended Ursuline High School and graduated from there. Even in high school and college, his dream was to become a professional football player. In 1969 the Pittsburgh Steelers invited him to a trial training session, but he was not accepted into the team. Since then he has only played football privately.
Until 1977, O'Neill worked as a steel worker, bartender, used car dealer and social studies teacher. Acting was initially just a hobby for him. He took acting classes at Youngstown State University and also appeared in various plays at the Youngstown Theater . After working as a teacher for seven years, he wanted to make acting his profession. Because of this, he moved to New York , where he got a chance in the Broadway production Knockout after the lead actor fell ill. Thanks to good reviews, he came to other offers and played in pieces by Tennessee Williams and John Steinbeck , among others .
He became known to a wide audience primarily through his television roles. In addition, however, he worked in various films, such as in My partner with the cold snout , Wayne's World and The Bone Hunter . He also played a leading role in the US series Modern Family .
O'Neill practices the martial art Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu , which he learned from the developers of this discipline, the "Gracie Family". After 14 years of training he was awarded the black belt.
In August 2011, he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
