Eddyville is a city (with a status of " City ") in Wapello County and to smaller parts in Mahaska and Monroe Counties in the US state of Iowa . In 2010 Eddyville had 1024 inhabitants, the number of which decreased slightly to 1011 by 2013.

Eddyville is located in southeastern Iowa on the Des Moines River , a right tributary of the Mississippi . This forms the border between Iowa and Illinois about 150 km east ; the Missouri border runs some 40 miles south.

history

Eddyville was named after the fur trader Jabish P. Eddy, who received the right to build a trading post on the Des Moines River around 1840. The place was founded in 1843 and developed well due to its location, but only until the railway line to Des Moines was built. The mining of coal in Wapello County took place as early as 1857, including through the Roberts Mine, located directly on the opposite bank of the Des Moines River.
