The Elida is a former fish and mail cutter and was Germany's only mission ship until a few years ago .

history

The ship was built in 1939 as a deep-sea fishing trawler ( ketch with gaff rigging ) in Norway , Høllen Søgne . The cutter was in use off Iceland for a long time , was later rebuilt and then sailed as a mail ship on Norway's coasts . The sign stating that a maximum of 98 passengers can be carried still comes from this time . The last stop before the sale to Germany was Landskrona , Sweden . There the cutter served as a restaurant ship. The original name of the ship was Maria II .

180 m² of sail area and a Kromhout diesel engine with a capacity of 10 liters provide the necessary propulsion power. The cutter is 22.22 m long, 4.77 m wide and has a draft of 2.3 m.

Mission cutter

In 1984 the association Missionskutter Elida e. V. built the ship for use as a mission ship in three years of loving detail work. The association belongs to the German Evangelist Conference .

Since 1987 the Elida has been sailing with the idea of reaching people in the ports on the Baltic coast between Wolgast and Flensburg with the message of the Bible . "Elida" comes from Scandinavian and means something like "noble light". The traditional ship is regularly on the move and is a regular guest at the Hanse Sail and the Kiel Week . It takes part in the annual Christian Müther memorial trip for children with asthma .

The Elida is present at various port festivals on the Baltic coast , then lies on the pier and serves as an attractive backdrop for missionary theater plays or as a stage for creative events. Cutter tours with a small gospel magic program on board are always popular . At the “ Open Ship ”, visitors can have the cutter shown and explained to them over a cup of coffee. There are always conversations with the guests in the truest sense of the word about God and the world .

crew

The Elida - Crew consists of church members and non-church members from all over Germany and partly Europe. The crew spends their missionary vacation at sea and is present at the port festivals in many cities on the Baltic coast.
