In the 1997/98 season , SK Rockaden Stockholm won its seventh title in a row by four points. Since the Elitserien for the 1998/99 season was increased to 12 teams, a relegation regulation was different from previous years. Only the bottom of the table had to be relegated directly, the penultimate still had the opportunity to qualify for the elite series in a qualifying tournament with the runner-up in the three Division I relays. In the previous year the Sollentuna SK , the Farsta SK and En Passant Svedala rose. While Sollentuna achieved relegation and immediately became runner-up, Svedala had to relegate directly and the Farsta SK contest the qualification tournament.
The competitions took place on October 25, November 15, December 6, 1997, January 17, February 7 and 28, and March 13, 14 and 15, 1998. The last three rounds were held centrally in Sollentuna .
The qualifying tournament took place on March 28th and 29th in Västerås and was played in a knockout system . Participants were Farsta SK as ninth in the Elitserien, Upsala ASS as second in Division I Norra, the host Västerås ÖSK / SA , who, as third in Division I Mellersta, benefited from the fact that the second team of Schacksällskapet Manhem placed in front of them was not eligible for promotion and of Växjö SK as second in Division I Södra. Farsta had narrowly prevailed in the semifinals against Växjö 5: 3, but in the final against Upsala (who had defeated Västerås 6: 2) a clear 6: 2 victory.
