Emil Engelhard (General)

August Emil Engelhard (born November 30, 1829 in Mainz , † April 25, 1885 in Bromberg ) was a Prussian major general and commander of the 8th Infantry Brigade .

Life

Emil was a son of the Prussian major Franz Engelhard (1790-1865) and his wife Elisabeth, born von Barle (1792-1867).

Military career

After visiting the cadet houses in Bensberg and Berlin , Engelhard was transferred on April 22, 1847 as a second lieutenant to the 34th Infantry Regiment (2nd Reserve Regiment) of the Prussian Army . From 1849 he was adjutant of the 2nd Battalion and completed the General War School from October 1853 to September 1856 for further training . He then served in the 2nd Company and was again adjutant of the 2nd Battalion in 1858/59. When he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant in mid-January 1859, he was transferred to the 17th Infantry Regiment in Wesel . From the end of January 1859 Engelhard was commanded as a company commander to the 2nd Battalion in the 17th Landwehr Regiment in Düsseldorf . He was promoted to captain and was assigned to the 17th Combined Infantry Regiment, from which the 8th Westphalian Infantry Regiment No. 57 was formed in early July 1860 . Engelhard was promoted to company commander in mid-November 1860 and took part in the General Staff training trip of the VII Army Corps in 1862 . In 1866 he led his company in the war against Austria in the battles of Münchengrätz and Königgrätz and received the Order of the Red Eagle, fourth class with swords , for his work .

After the war he was transferred to Zeitz on October 30, 1866 as chief of the 12th Company in Infantry Regiment No. 86 . With promotion to the superfluous major, Engelhard was commanded on March 22, 1868 as adjutant of the General Command of the VII Army Corps and on April 8, 1869, left in his position in the grenadier regiment "King Friedrich Wilhelm IV." (1st Pomeranian ) No. 2 moved. With the appointment as commander of the Fusilier Battalion in Stettin Engelhard resigned on June 25, 1869 in the troop service. He led this battalion in 1870/71 in the war against France at Gravelotte , Villiers , Pesmes , Dole , Perrecy-les-Forges , Mouchard , Salins-les-Bains and Pontarlier as well as before Metz and Paris .

Awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , Engelhard was promoted to lieutenant colonel after the peace treaty at the end of March 1873 , and on October 16, 1873, under position à la suite of his regiment, he was entrusted with the management of the business as director of the military shooting school. Engelhard was briefly commanded from August 30 to September 15, 1881 to lead the 22nd Infantry Brigade .
