The 1956/57 season was the first season of the Eredivisie , the highest Dutch football league. It was the start of professional football competition in the Netherlands and contained the 18 best clubs in the country. Ajax Amsterdam won the championship for the 9th time . Willem II Tilburg and FC Eindhoven had to relegate .
